Hello everyone. Here is the first batch of sheet photos from the ones Fred Young sent. Gerry did his usual painstaking job of scanning them for our enjoyment. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing them.
The scans are actually about three times the size you will see on Kodak. If you want a scanned sheet in digital format, Gerry Mitchell will be glad to send it to you - gerry.mitchell@rainellereunion.com. Or, you can order photo prints from Kodak. If you register with Kodak, you can "Edit" the photos or a sheet of photos and "crop" out the section you want, then order the print for 15 to 99 cents (4 x 6 and 5 x 7.) You may be able to get good quality 8 x 11's.
If you are in one of the photos (or have a relative in one of them) and do not wish to be included, please let us know and we will remove the photo.
Check back every few days and you will see more photos added to this Kodak slide show. I will post periodic noticed of additions.
Thank you again, Fred - http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.3ehf8z7o&x=0&y=-m8k23z

Janet, Thank you so much for sharing your memories of our store. It was truly an old fashioned country general store. I realize those types of stores are lost to the past, but it always thrills me to see them attempt to recreate them for people to enjoy today. I remember when I was young and 'little' my Uncle R. A. would pay me to get inside of the glass showcases and clean them. (you had to get clear inside in order to close the sliding doors to clean them.) I had to take the merchandise and the shelves out , clean the glass, put everything back, and then I got my dollar...that's right, $1.00 per showcase, but I was soooooo proud![:) I believe there were 13 of them..... I'd like to see me attempt to get inside one of those today........On second thought, that wouldn't be a good idea!!! I also remember sprinkling that blue/green 'sawdust like stuff' on the floors to oil them. We would leave it on for a day or two and then it all had to be swept up-I did my share of that too! I wanted to respond to your recollection of paying your electic bills at Flint's. Mr. Honus (Chub) Griffith worked for Meadow River Power Company and had his "office" in the store from 1947 until 1970 when Meadow River sold out to Georgia Pacific. After that he went to the Bank of Rainelle. I spoke with Chub's widow, Marie, to confirm the dates. Many of you will remember Marie from her many years of teaching and substituting in our area schools. We lost Chub several years ago, but Marie is a young 87 years old.
Thanks again for sharing your memories!

In one of the Jennis photos there is a picture of a Diner.....I am thinking it is the old bus terminal which was on the cornor beside the old Flint hardware store.....TRUE OR FALSE?????
Later the greyhound bus terminal moved to a new location with a pharmacy inside of it....called of all things.. TERMINAL DRUG
Also in the area of the old bus terminal there was a hospital that my mother would speak of........is this true? someone please refresh my memory...

Andy, The old East Rainelle Hospital was above the old Flint's Hardware Store and the bus terminal. That building was owned by Dr. Wall until his death and then tied up in his estate until it was torn down after it burned in 1983. The hospital was later located on 11th street and is now apartments.

Andy,
True -- these days terminal drug has a different meaning.
Several Rangers, including me, Gerry Mitchell, Carolyn Johnson & many more, were born at the hospital. I think it was above the bus terminal, but I'm not sure. My mom used to tell me that and I couldn't picture it since it looked much different than it apparently did at the time. It would be great to get some photos of the hospital and know more about the staff. Dale

Dale, Dr. Jackson was one of the Doctors who was at the Old Hospital, because when I was a little girl and had not started to school, Dr. Jackson removed a cyst from my foot, and Arnold Lewis carried me out and put me in the car and took me home. Shirley B. Wickline 53

My mother also told me those apartments used to be a hospital. I was hoping someone would mention it.

Thank you, Shirley, for the additional information.
Gerry Mitchell sent a helpful note about the hospital and area. He spoke to his mother who filled in some holes for us. Please write with any corrections and additions.
I TALKED TO MOM ABOUT THE EAST RAINELLE HOSPITAL WHICH WAS ABOVE FLINT'S HARDWARE STORE WHICH LATER WAS THE BUS TERMINAL. THIS WAS THE SECOND HOSPITAL THAT WAS IN EAST RAINELLE. THIS IS THE HOSPITAL THAT MY MOM WORKED AT DURING WORLD WAR II. IT WAS A 35 BED HOSPITAL AND HAD TEN MATERITY PLACES. IT HAD A NURSES QUARTERS AND A DINING ROOM DOWNSTAIRS AND AN ELEVATOR AND A TECHNICIAN'S QUARTERS DOWNSTAIRS WITH ENTRANCES ON BOTH FLOORS OF THE BUILDING. SOME ENTRANCES WERE TO THE SIDE. THE MAIN HOSPITAL, OF COURSE, WAS ON THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE BUILDING. THIS HOSPITAL WAS OPENED A FEW YEARS BEFORE WORLD WAR II AND THE HOSPITAL CLOSED SOON AFTER THE WAR ENDED. I WAS BORN IN 1946 AT THIS EAST RAINELLE HOSPITAL ABOVE FLINT'S HARDWARE SO IT MUST HAVE CLOSED SOON AFTER I WAS BORN. (Dale's addition, I was born in December 1946 in the hospital.) A DOCTOR JACKSON AND DOCTOR WAUL RAN THE PLACE. I DID NOT KNOW WHEN THE OLD HOSPITAL BUILDING AND HARDWARE STORE WAS TORN DOWN BUT PATTY OSBORNE SAID IT WAS IN THE MID 1980S SO THAT ANSWERS THAT QUESTION. FLINT'S STORE WAS PUT INTO THE OLD A & P STORE BEFORE THE OLD HOSPITAL BUILDING WAS TORN DOWN. I REMEMBER THE OLD FLINT'S HARDWARE STILL THERE IN THE OLD HOSPITAL BUILDING WHEN I LEFT FOR WARREN, OHIO. YOU WOULD PROBABLY REMEMBER THE DATES BETTER THAN ME ON WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BUILDING. THERE WAS A HOSPITAL IN EAST RAINELLE """BEFORE"""" THE ONE ABOVE FLINT'S HARDWARE. THE FIRST EAST RAINELLE HOSPITAL WAS IN THE BUILDING ON ELEVENTH ST JUST ABOVE WHERE THE KING COLE HOTEL IS LOCATED. IT HAS NOT BEEN A HOSPITAL FOR MANY YEARS NOW AND HAS APPARTMENTS IN IT NOW. THAT WAS THE FIRST EAST RAINELLE HOSPITAL LONG BEFORE THE HOSPITAL ABOVE FLINT'S HARDWARE WAS PUT IN AND MY AUNT WAS BORN THERE IN 1929. BUT THAT HOSPITAL WAS CLOSED LONG BEFORE WORLD WAR II. IT WAS TURNED INTO AN APPARTMENT BUILDING THEN LATER, IN MORE RECENT TIMES, BEFORE THE RAINELLE CLINIC WAS BUILT, THEY REMODELED THAT OLD BUILDING ON ELEVENTH ST ABOVE THE KING COLE HOTEL TO MAKE A HOSPITAL OUT OF IT AGAIN IN MORE RECENT TIMES BUT IT DID NOT HAVE AN ELEVATOR AND DID NOT PASS INSPECTION SO IT NEVER BECAME A HOSPITAL AGAIN. I GUESS IT IS STILL APPARTMENTS TO THIS DAY. THE BUS TERMINAL DID NOT GO INTO THE HOSPITAL BUILDING WHERE FLINTS HARDWARE WAS LOCATED UNTIL AFTER THE EAST RAINELLE HOSPITAL CLOSED IN THE BUILDING AND THE BUS TERMINAL WAS LOCATED THERE UNTIL IT WAS MOVED TO THE TERMINAL DRUG LOCATION. I DO NOT KNOW THE DATE THE TERMINAL WAS MOVED. I KNOW THE TERMINAL DRUG WAS STILL IN RAINELLE WHEN I LEFT FOR WARREN, OHIO, SO I AM NOT SURE WHEN THE TERMINAL WAS CLOSED FOR GOOD. I GUESS THERE IS NO BUS TERMINAL NOW IN RAINELLE AT ALL NOW. MOM TOLD ME ALL OF THIS WHEN I CALLED HER THIS MORNING. I JUST WANTED TO GET IT STRAIGHT. MY MOM HAS SOME PICTURES OF THE HOSPITAL BUT DOES NOT KNOW WHERE THEY ARE. I MIGHT HELP HER LOOK FOR SOME OF THEM WHEN I GO DOWN THERE AGAIN. PATTY OSBORNE MIGHT HAVE SOME PICTURES OF THE HOSPITAL AND HARDWARE STORE.
Dale's note: Patty or anyone, if you have any photos, please sent them to Gerry (gerry.mitchell@rainellereunion.com) or scan them for us. ENCLOSED IS A PICTURE OF A BUS IN FRONT OF THE BUS TERMINAL AND THE EDGE OF THE OLD HARDWARE AND HOSPITAL. THIS IS ALONG MAIN STREET. I WISH I HAD A BETTER PICTURE.
To see the photo, please click on: http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.3uc9bdsc&x=0&y=-gxwhv
Thank you, Gerry - and please pass our thanks on to your mom. Dale

I had a tonsillectomy at the East Rainelle Hospital in 1935. Dr. Jackson was the surgeon and Dr. Wall the general practitioner ... both were fine doctors. The anesthetic used at that time was ether ... ugh!!! |

OOPS---I did know that the hospital was over the store during World War II---sorry about that error in a previous post!
Thanks to Gerry's Mother, Wenona, and to Gerry for filling in some 'holes' for me as well. I recently spoke with Wenona and she filled me in on a lot of other history that I was curious about. She has an excellent memory!!!
A little more info on the entrances to the hospital: The elevator to the hospital was located right inside what later became the rear door entrance to the Hardware store. That elevator was used to transport the patients upstairs and all of you that came through that rear entrance came through the old elevator shaft. I have no idea about the dates. I, too, wish we could locate more pictures. Unfortunately, I don't have any.
Also, to jog memories ... the buses actually pulled down the street beside the bus terminal (as you can see in the picture) That street was later closed when 7-Eleven (now Pit Row) was built.

Hello everyone. Gerry has scanned and sent the final 15 Jennis photos from the albums that Fred Young was kind enough to loan. They are enjoyable, as evidenced by the discussion they generated. If anyone else has old treasures like this that we can add to the online Rainelle museum, please let Gerry know.

In my faint memory I think that just on the otherside of the creek from Jennis Studios, the Micozzi family had what was known as the "Dog Wagon." It was there through part of the 50's. Anyone else remember this? |
