FRED,
Your dad and my brother Afton spent hours at our house building airplanes. Sometimes they flew them in the vacant lot across tje street.

I think I still have some old pictures of floods and other things. I remember that your grand father did magic tricks. I am a clown and had to do a report one time and told about him and Roy Hughart
cutting a hole in a shoe box and took the kids to the shoe department and showing this finger and scaring us to death when it moved.
Your grandparents watched me grow up and were a big part of my life, and I have many pictures from Jennis Studio, and many memories of all your family.

Patty, one of my best memories of Rainelle is Flint's Hardware. It had an entrance in the rear of the store, and I remember how the wood floors creaked. The smell was wonderful, I guess it must have been fertilizer, oil on the wood floors, and ?????. I don't know exactly, but I will never forget going in there. You also went there to pay either the water bill or the electric bill. I think it may have been the water bill. That store had EVERYTHING!!! Usually it was my dad who was going there to get something, and I tagged along with the poor man everywhere he went. He probably never had a moment's peace.

Yes, Just mentioning the airplanes hanging in the studio does bring back our memory...We can picture everything in our mind now...
Of course, being a young girl the airplane had no interest to me at all...Airplanes were for boys....But i do remember them well ...

Patty had written a great quote:
quote:
"What your eyes can't see...lives in your heart!"

I just wanted to say Fred has done some research in his personal closet bringing back great memories for him and soon to be ours.
Fred will soon be sharing his memories with all of us...!!!

We will soon see through the eyes of our very own hometown photographer, Mr. Young from Jennis Studio from long ago. Fred is sending pictures and information to our professional scanner and photo finisher Gerry Mitchell....

I might add when Gerry receives the information from Fred he will be like a little boy at Christmas....Full of Excitment...at the treasures he has received...

I will speak for Gerry and all of us out here in the world of internet space....

THANK YOU FRED.....

I remember Jennis Studio very well. And Donnie and Phyliss and there whole family. Bev - Donnie's oldest daughter was one of my best friends in high school and we were roommates at Marshall our freshman year. I recently was able to get back in touch with Bev and we've rekindled a friendship that has lasted since 1969. That's almost 40 years.

I think something a lot of people are forgetting about Jennis studio is that Mr. Young also helped with musical supplies. What would the Rainelle and Greenbrier West marching bands done without him!

A couple of notes. Most of the phptographs wer by my Dad, Earl, using bulk film after WWII. Hopefully, Gerry can find a few bits of useful material in what I sent out today.

I also remember Granddad having musical instruments in the shop all the time. I even remmebr having a trumpet I bought in Gallipolis for band in junior high, and then later seeing the really neat cornet Granddad had in the shop on a visit. I thought the cornet was great, but Dad never gave in. Grandad also had a "V" guitar someone ordered and never bought. I wonder if anyone ever bought and played that thing?

I also see, at least based on some ads on the internet that much of Main Street seems to be for sale, including Mosrie's. I recall little of that store (being a dress shop), but I was intrigued that there is an entire home on the second floor. Can someone tell me more?

MrYoung opened a studio in Beckley,WV in the mid 20's. In the early 30's the relocated to Rainelle. His first studio in Rainelle was an old ice house. He built a porch onto it and painted a backdrop. This is where he took his portraits, then he would go into the ice house, close the door and develope the film. Then he would put the negative and a peice of chemically treated tin in a frame under glass and bring them out into the sunlight and expose the tin. Then he would return into the ice house and develop the "Tintype Photo". This studio was located where the gas pumps for the Little General Store are now located at the split between Greenbrier Ave and Main Stree. A short time later, He rented a building across the street from where the Dollar General Store is now located. A few years later, he moved on down main street into the building where Vonora and I were born. This later became Rosalie's Restaurant. In 1941, Mr. Young once again relocated to the on the bridge beside Mitch's Popcorn Stand and the Alpine Theater. Some whrere around 1950 he moved the Studio for the last time. This time he moved across the street into what used to be Roy Hugharts Habadashery. Going west on Route 60 from the bridge, there was the Post Office, an alley, the Royal Cafe, the Idle Hur pool hall, Macazzie's Dinner, an alley, and then Jennis Studio. Later on he bought the building that attached to this building and came out onto third street. He kept this as his main front for a few years, but later moved the storefront back to main street. Then he rented the other building. This is where the Studio remained until he passed away September 1, 1984. This building complex was sold to a lady who opened a Christian book store. It later caught fire and was badly damaged, and the hardware store bought it and now uses it for a warehouse.

Mr.Young was instrlumental in getting East Rainelle chartered, and also organizing the 4th of July celebration in East Rainelle. He made several trips to Charleston, Lewisburg and Washington D.C. to get these events accomplished.

Bobby's history is great. I raelly miss the Jennis Studio sign.

We are working on putting more info together, but it will take some time.

For those who are interested, I wanted to note that in a few weeks, "We are Marshall" premieres. My wife Cat and I are going to a local Marshall alumni premier near Cincy ( in place of my Dad). When the movie comes your way, please take time to see it.

Fred, thanks so much for your posting about Jennis Studio - and the memories it rekindled. My first memory of Jennis Studio was as a place to buy penny candy. Later, it became the place to have your pictures developed - after I bought my $10 camera there in 1949. But your pictures were the highlight! They were so much Earl. Mr. Young was more a portrait man and for formal occasions, Earl just took pictures of people. Both did excellent work. I can't imagine Mr. Young taking the picture of Donnie holding up the bridge, but Earl - definitely. My oldest brother, Benny, spent a lot of time with Earl and down at the studio. It probably started with both loving model planes and cameras. When you mentioned the use of bulk film, I recalled Benny loading 35mm cartridges with different size loads . Most likely he was getting the bulk film thru Earl. Benny was in several of the pictures on the Kodak site, pictures I know I don't have - but will get. I know his daughter will want them. A couple of the shots were obviously posed: his pictures in an AAF officer's uniform beside Dad's 1948 Chrysler parked on 4th St. Benny was in the USAF but with enlisted status. I can picture him and Earl having a laugh with those, altho I don't have any idea where they got the uniform. In several of the pictures Benny was carrying his trusty Argus C-3, which he later sold to me and I used until 1965. I'm looking forward to seeing the remainder of the pictures you sent Gerry (he does great work, doesn't he?). And thanks again for your contribution.

Hello everyone, Bob Young sent Gerry some very interesting photos, primarily from the 1930's it appears. They include ball teams, Benny Napier's boy scout troop, a parade float, a carnival and others. Kodak's sizing stretched them a bit, but they are still very enjoyable to view. If you want the smaller, clearer originals e-mailed to you, please let Gerry Mitchell know - gerry.mitchell@rainellereunion.com. Thank you Gerry and Bob - http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.9x18xzt0&x=0&y=yph3jx

Uncle Bobby's stuff is really great. I will bug him in my inimitable fashion for more.

As far as Kenneth Napier's note, I was very happy to see that. Dad (Earl) was a good amateur photographer, but not close to Donny or Bobby I suspect in skills, and certinaly not his Dad's skills, but he apparently loved taking photos of people. Dad also said he (Dad) was a really good finisher, whatever that means. Sorry, I can point a shoot a camera, and that's it.

Thanks for identifying for me the guy in the uniform. I remember Dad always taking about Benny Napier with great enthusiasm. I know what he looked like now.

Dad also talked a lot about doing aircraft recognition models for the military in WWII. I beve been trying to find information about that type of war effort. It sounds fascinating to me.

Finally, the Argus C-3 - was that a "splt frame" camera? Dad had a split frame until he became ill. That was a good camera, too. I wish I had it back, but I think it just got misplaced in the move.
