Before I begin this topic, I hope no one will skip the reunion because of concerns about their weight or other physical ailments. My doctor told me that the warranty is off at 40 years old and not to expect so much after that. If you have looked at the past reunion photos, you will see that we come in all shapes and sizes. As we grow older, we look more at the heart and eyes, not the shape. I know that we look forward to seeing as many of the people we love as possible at the 2007 reunion.
Having said that, I want to lose some weight before the reunion! I did well until I hit the age of 40 by running, doing some exercise, watching what I ate, etc. At the young age of 52, I decided (for a few reasons) to start an Internet business. The business has gone well, but it devoured all of my time for the first four years and still takes quite a bit of time. I basically sat in front of a computer for several years and piled on weight. I didn't eat that much, but I didn't get any exercise. I weigh almost 90 pounds more than I did in high school (130 or so to 218. Coach Hamrick and Coach Zopp (two great coaches) would have loved my weight, but not my condition.) I was quite thin in high school. I am quite non-thin now.
When my daughter and I visited Andy Aide Pendleton in early August, Andy amazed me with her energy level and how fast she walked. I have read that one's fitness plan can't be drudgery or it won't last. I like walking so I decided to take that approach. My joints and body would go on a major strike if I tried running. I tried running in August just to see what would happen and did well for the first ten feet. I rested a while and decided I had better walk for a few weeks before trying to expand the run to 20 feet. Acutally, I may not get past walking at my age (59) and condidition. But, that's okay.
I had to start very slowly. I got winded walking up the steps to the park where I often walk and I had to stop and catch my breath. But, I have progressed nicely. I have been walking for a month now and am up to four miles of brisk walking. I feel so much better and am excited. Even though I am often tired when it is time to walk, I get an energy burst after I start and I truly look forward to my daily walk. I feel so much better afterwards and I sleep better. I haven't lost much weight yet, but that's okay. I bought a CD player with a belt pouch and sometimes listen to audios or music, but often just walk around a local lake and enjoy the view, ducks, turtles, fish, dogs, children and people. The lake is a big help since it keeps the walk interesting. Here are some of my photos of the lake, which is almost exactly two miles all the way around - http://www.consultwebs.com/ncphotos/lake_lynn.htm
I think others might find it enjoyable to hear your ideas on how to stay as fit as possible and how to eat well while enjoying it. (I dislike salads and welcome ways to make them taste like seafood or fudge or something more tasty.)
We are at different stages of health and knee situations, etc., so tips are welcome such as swimming and other approaches that are easier on the joints.
If you have links, please submit them. I found one site that is pretty good. http://health.msn.com/dietfitness/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100140597
http://health.msn.com/dietfitness/weightloss.aspx
We look forward to your comments. Dale (before). I hope to have an (after) body by reunion time.

Dale: My nephew, who is a fitness trainer and currently obtaining his doctor of chiropractic in SC, says we should take Flax Oil capsules daily. If using the liquid Flax Oil, take one tablespoon daily. Some people take up 7 Flax Oil capsules per day. Another excellent product for the bones, arthritis, etc. is Fish Oil capsules. The inexpensive capsules at Walmart work just as good as the expensive ones purchased from other sources. Now, for the weight - uh, if we could tape our hands to our sides that would probably work. ha. Hang in there, Dale, your scales may not show a decrease but your clothing will gradually get bigger, then you will know the walking is working! You've even inspired me to hit the trail again. Have a great day. |

Dale, this posting was so funny! I enjoyed reading it very much. I do not think you are alone in your quest for fitness! I, too, was thin as a stick (probably too thin, but not intentionally) when I was young, but now weigh more than I did when I was 9 months pregnant. Boy, do things change.
I tried walking for a long while, but I could just not stick with it. Now I can see that the problem was that I did not have a scenic lake as the backdrop. I think Lake Lynn would encourage me to keep walking. After a while, I started going to Curves, a fitness place just for women that uses exercise equipment alternately with walking in place. I went there for about a year and a half before I started losing weight, but so far i have lost 6 1/2 pounds. Only took 2 years.
But I also stopped eating sugar, which I realized that with my family history of diabetes was eventually going to kill me. I believe that was the turning point in starting to lose weight. You get used to unsweet tea and fruit for a snack instead of a candy bar.
I believe the key to losing weight is to be persistent (keep exercising, even when the weight does not immediately come off), and allowing yourself to slip up sometimes on the diet (we can't always drink unsweet tea and eat fruit--sometimes social dictates require that you drink sweet tea!).
Keep up the good work, Dale!!! Keep walking; we're all right behind you! |

Thank you for the enjoyable comments and tips, Marilyn and Janet. Janet, regarding your comment, "Keep up the good work, Dale!!! Keep walking; we're all right behind you!", when I first started walking, ladies pushing babies in carriages, people much older than me, and children would zip right by me. Not many people were "behind me" very long. Now, I compete pretty well with the ladies in baby carriages and only get passed by a few of them. I saw one very elderly gentleman behind me a few days ago and tried my best to speed up my pace and stay ahead, but he caught me. Give me another week or two and I'll take him!
BTW, the "lose weight while you sleep" pills don't work. A, uh, friend told me. that. I'm still waiting on the "lose weight while you eat" pills. Meanwhile, I'll keep walking. Dale

Hello everyone. I got a very humorous e-mail from a special Ranger friend. I asked her if I could place it on the board. She says I can, but I can't use her name. She wants to be referred to as "Biker Chick or something else that makes me sound tough!" She wrote the following very funny comments. You would be surprised if you knew who wrote it, but I had to swear to secrecy. I don't dare cross "Biker Chick" until I can walk much faster and maybe even run. Dale ____
You have me laughing with your walking story A woman would never post her weight on a discussion board unless it is one where she talks about how much weight she has lost. Having said that, I prefer not to post this message on the board. I, too, sit in front of a computer all day, enough said. You could get this published in a magazine such as AARP, Weight Watchers or some walking magazine but I sure wouldn't know the names of those. My husband and I recently started riding bikes. He is really good. I am another story. To provide you some entertainment, imagine this. You park your bike at a curb before you get on. This is so you can swing your leg over both the back wheel and the seat. The seat is a little high because you can't get your knee up high enough to get your foot on the pedal if the seat is very low. Because the seat is high, your feet barely touch the ground. You must make sure that the pedal is in the correct position so that you can poosh (lol) off with it in order to attain a little speed. This helps because you sometimes need more than one wheel rotation to get that other knee up on the pedal. Once you finally get going, it is a wonderful to feel the wind in your face and hair but you can't get off until you find a curb again. You slowly coast to the curb, stopping close so that once again, you are able to swing your leg over the seat and wheel to get off. Forget about trying to step over the bar between the handle bars and seat. You can't get your leg high enough to do this even if you tilt the bike to a dangerous level. It helps if your riding partner stands near you when you dismount so that he/she can help you maintain your balance when you get that leg high in the air to pass over the seat. Experts say that you must bike for five miles to equal one mile of walking. A fat butt could be a problem for distance riding such as this Have you noticed how little bike seats are now? It is like having a constant wedgy when you are riding. My daughter taught me that term when she played softball. Some stores do sell a wide seat and you might think that is what you need. However, the wider the seat, the wider you must swing that leg. Get the picture. Despite all this, we are having fun riding around our neighborhood. Yes, all the kids on bikes pass us by. But, we can go faster than the strollers! The lake pictures are beautiful. Try weight watchers. It is a high fiber, low fat diet. It works if you stick to it or so I hear. P.S. The above is a true story and the names have not been changed to protect the innocent and so I will deny every word from this day on. ______
Biker Chick, we hope you will entertain us with some more very humorous tips if you can find time between working on the computer and "being tough".

Speaking of bicycles ....my daughter, who is now 21, has never learned to ride a bicycle. While she was still in high school, she decided it would be a good idea to know how to ride a bicycle, so since we don't OWN any kind of equipment that requires a lot of physical activity, I borrowed an old bike from a friend at work. Katie never did learn to ride the bike, BUT while we had the bike in our possession, Larry and I thought it was great fun to relive our youth by zipping down the street once in a while.
I came home one afternoon to find Larry sitting at the kitchen table, kind of pale looking, with the blood pressure cuff on his arm. Turns out, he'd thought it was a good idea to ride the bike out the road a ways and then back home. He wasn't really having a heart attack, but it was a long time before he ever thought about getting on the bike again.
I know very well about trying to get your leg over the seat to get on and off the bike, but the bad thing is, we don't have a CURB at our house!! So after one of my little rides, I tried to get off the bike in our driveway and didn't quite make it. I fell flat on the driveway, and it REALLY HURT!!!!!
Moral of this story: exercise with caution, especially when using a bicycle, and it looks like it might be a good idea to avoid bicycles unless you are close to a curb. LOL |

Dale, I enjoyed talking with you today. We all (almost all) need to lose a few pounds for sure and I am glad you are taking the steps to keep yourself around longer. I think that Andy is just one of those "lucky" people who keep their shape. I know she plays a lot of golf and exorcises but that little s--- is the same size as she was in high school. There has to be some luck in that. I certainly could stand to lose 20 lbs and am trying to cut back on the Jif Peanut Butter and Miracle Whip sandwiches (don't knock it till you have tried it). I was at MB last week and talked to JoAnn (McMann) Boone and had dinner with Dee Dee (Deloris Bell) Oberer. Both are doing ok and looking forward to the reunion next summer. Keep in touch.

Hello everyone. This is a fun topic. I received a couple of e-mails from folks that I will share. One Ranger friend wrote that he has never subscribed to exercising in the way most people do it. However, he believes in working outside all day and doing as much activity as he can for exercise. He is restricted by his health problems, but has a lot to do outside and enjoys getting some exercise while he does his work.
Hmm... Work. A novel concept, but not very appealing. If my grandad was still alive and heard that I was walking around a lake in New Balance shoes while listening to a CD, for exercise, he would probably kick me in the rear with his boot and tell me to "get to work!" Times have changed. He couldn't have pictured making a living sitting at a computer in air conditioned comfort and having to walk to keep from getting fat. :-) _____
Another friend wrote, "that (Biker Chick's post) was so funny! Yours was very very funny too! I daresay most of us are many pounds heavier haha. Don't despair about that weight, don't even get on the scales. Your clothes will begin to feel bigger and then you will get excited about the walking. You are strenghtening muscles so the numbers may not go down at first but the inches do. Good Luck!! Keep us posted on the board about your progress. I started Tai Chi and real gentle excercises at the OH NO SENIOR CITIZENS CENTER last week! haha. Those older ladies are so sweet and I can see that it will be a fun winter down there. They also dance afterwards. I am relearning the "Slide" dance." ____
I'm having fun. Yesterday, I got a call from Ed Smith, called Jewell Morris Dean about a question she had sent and was having trouble receiving my e-mail response. When I called, I called her Jewell Morris and heard a long pause - she doesn't get that often these days. ) I have received some fun e-mails from other Rangers.

"Biker Chick" has struck again! I hope she strikes often. She is very funny and an excellent writer. _____ Biker Chick writes: Hello Janet, Thanks for sharing your entertaining bicycle experiences. I can relate. One evening after my husband and I had returned home after our ride, he chased me down with the blood pressure cuff in his hand. Understand, that I didn't run very fast as I was a bit winded from our one mile ride. Surprisingly, my blood pressure was normal and he decided that he didn't need to call 911 after all. I also know about falling. My husband encouraged me to ride down a steep hill. Of course, this meant that I had to ride up a steeper hill. I almost made it but as I neared the top, my wheels started to wobble and since I was riding on the sidewall, there was no handy curb. I had no choice. I had to "lay my bike down" in the grass. I must have done it quite gracefully as I didn't hear my husband laughing. He may have been choking it back though because his face turned very red for a short time. He hasn't encouraged me to try any hills since so it was a fortuitous fall. I recommend wearing the correct clothing. As some denim doesn't stretch a lot, you probably should wear sweat pants. This makes it easier to get your knees up way high on the pedals. I wanted to buy some of those cool cycling clothes and I did a little looking around in the sports stores. "They" tell you that cycling is good for weight management but "they" don't sell cycling clothes in plus sizes. Now does that make any sense? I saw this one brand called "Biker Chick" and thought is was made for me. A short sleeve jersey shirt was only $54.99. It was a bargain because it had a reflective Biker Chick logo but alas, the largest size was only XL. I am pleased to say that the helmets and socks fit me just fine. Yes, bicycle socks are sold because they keep your feet cool even while they are sweating. Now, I do admit that on rare occasions I have worked up a sweat but never in all my years have I needed special socks so that my feet won't sweat when I exercise. I must be doing it all wrong. And hello Ed, I have seen those pictures that Andy took of you and your lovely wife when you were in Rainelle. You look very trim and if you could stand to lose only 20 lbs, then consider yourself lucky. You can buy the reduced fat Jiffy and the light Miracle Whip. A couple of those sandwiches and you will lose that little bit of weight in no time. Yes, Andy looks wonderful as she is still tiny and beautiful. I don't know what her secret is but she should post it to the site. If she doesn't, then we will just have to tickle it out of her next summer at the reunion. I bet by then Dale will be able to catch her for us.

This is FYI...I found a website: www.justmove.org which was developed by the American Heart Association and is very user friendly, especially for those of us (me included)who need some general info, advice and encouragement that is NOT complicated, convoluted, whatever!...There are different activity levels suited to meet your specific need... |

Ok Gang I might not have a weight issue at this time, I have been eating a lot of chocolate covered cherries that Randy has been bringing home....Those nice liquid filled ones...I ate every peice in the box except three, Randy ate the rest..........he is now on his way to the store to buy some more...
I admit I do not have a weight issue however with proper exercising it does help to maintain the weight one has....Walking !!! I have been doing for years....Susie and I are the town street walkers...We were known to blaze a few trails in our surrounding mountain, however we slowed down on that beaten path after a few snakes, bears and strangers. Oh! forgot to add being lost in the woods...sort of disorientated only to be found by a pack of dogs...(that was fun)..talk about taking the weight off....
Just recently I had traveled to Florida to visit with my daughter and her family....Beth, my daughter, made me appointment for my hair at a really nice salon. I thought to myself with all these people getting ready to present themselves to our reunion I must come up with something new.....Well I went in the salon to have my white hair colored...that did not happen ..they would NOT color my hair....Maybe my friend and classmate Colin the famous hairstylest in New York will do the job.....I must have a new look for the reunion ..just for my biker chick friend who should never change.....biker chick is the greatest and I will look forward to seeing biker at our all school reunion.....Biker has a big happy heart.......

Nell, I enjoyed the justmove.org site. I entered my schedule into the calendar and am going to shoot for the goals I entered. It has good info, as you said.
I miss hearing from the very entertaining Biker Chick and hope she will send more reports soon.
I am hooked on walking. You can do it almost anywhere as long as it isn't raining. You get to enjoy see some countryside. I have the good fortune to travel a lot in my job and see all types of weather. I was in Ft. Lauderdale last week and walking in 93 degree weather. I'm looking forward to coming to Rainelle this weekend for Bridge Day and to visit. I look forward to Rainelle hot dogs at the old C&H Drive Inn at 6:00 p.m. Saturday. Stop by if you are in the area and we'll enjoy one together.
One of my daughters, Christian, and I visited with Colin Lively, a classmate and friend while I was in NY two weeks ago on business. Colin is very fit. He works out each morning and walks all over New York, as do most NY residents. You can see a photo of Colin and a few NY scenes at http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.6nszmlik&x=0&y=ti04cm along with a few Ft. Lauderdale photos.
I still have a long way to go, but am excited about the progress I am making. I don't get passed nearly as often when I walk. I did get passed a couple days ago at my Raleigh lake by a lady about my age who just powered right by me like I was standing still.
I enjoyed watching "The Biggest Loser" last year on TV. I started watching it, thinking that Ed Smith finally got a show, but learned that it was about people who start at very large weights and lose a lot of weight. Those folks are inspirational. I'm kidding about Ed, of course. He's a winner.
I look forward to more posts on the exercise topic. Dale

Hi Dale. I've been very busy with family birthdays etc. I so much enjoyed the picture of Colin and New York as well at Fort Lauderdale. I look forward to more photos of your travels. I'm sure most on here do too. I have a Ranger friend near Roanoke, Va. who has traveled extensively in the world. I wish she could scan some of her pictures onto this site.
It's exciting to read of the walking others are doing and now you, Dale, like Forrest Gump did, get to walk all over the United States. Keep posting, it will be interesting to read about the places you go, where you walk and what you see on those walks. (As I type on here, I am hoping our English teachers aren't reading too carefully.)

Dale, I really enjoyed your pictures but must admit, I would rather look at your daughter than Colin. I will note however, that Colin has not changed that much from high school and anyone who ever knew him at Rainelle would reconize him if they ran into him anywhere. Nancy used to make some trips to NYC before she retired and Colin would show her around and entertain her and she always had a hoot of a good time. As far as the weight thing, I guess we are all at the age to start getting into shape before it is too late. I admire someone like Andy who has maintained it over the years and does not have to do a "crash" program. Maybe being a "streetwalker" like Andy would help us but I'm not sure how much business there is for something like that in Rainelle since the boys of the Class of 64 left. I appreciate the advice concerning switching to "Lite" Jif Peanut Butter but, I will drink skim milk, lite bread, diet Pepsi and make a lot of changes but I cannot bring myself to eat anything but regular Jif so I will have to figure out a different way to lose. Actually, We have exercise equipment at home, I just have to make myself get on them daily instead of once in a while. I wish we could be at the drive-in on saturday night to eat hot dogs (are those on any diet?) but have grandchildren's sports events to attend saturday night. Andy, since you are the most trim of the bunch, would you eat one for me? I like everything you can pile on them. Also, Andy, I agree with Nell, you should not do anything to your hair. This website is terrific and it is fun to log on and see everyone comments. I hope more classmates find it and start using it. |
