Hello everyone, there is hope! Walking helps. Also, do as your mama told you, "eat your veggies." We'll have to include an hour of walking each day during the Rainelle Reunion.

I saw two good articles in USA Today. The first is "Middle-aged people can walk off extra weight" - http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2006-10-23-adults-walking_x.htm It includes, "Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh found that overweight middle-aged people who walked briskly for 30 to 60 minutes a day lost 7 pounds in a year and a half, while similar adults who didn't exercise consistently gained seven pounds in that time." It continues, "In the second study, University of North Carolina researchers did an analysis of data on young adults, ages 18 to 30, over a 15-year period and found those who walked four or more hours a week were the least likely to gain weight as they aged." It continued, "Penny Gordon-Larsen, an assistant professor of nutrition at North Carolina, analyzed data on 5,000 young adults over 15 years. She found that a slightly overweight woman who walked two extra hours each week over 15 years gained 9 pounds less in that time than a similar woman who didn't walk that much. Women who walked an extra four hours each week gained 18 pounds less over that time than women who didn't move that much. The effects were similar for men. "Extra walking prevents weight gain at a time of life when many people are gaining," she says.

A second article said, "Stay sharp: Eat a cup of vegetables a day" - http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2006-10-23-veggies-aging_x.htm I need all the help I can get here. The article included this, "Test scores usually worsen slightly as time goes on, but seniors who said they ate 2.8 servings of vegetables a day saw their rate of cognitive change slowed by 40% during the study. A serving in the study was defined as a half-cup."

Dale, do french fries count as a vegetable? Or potato chips? They're made from potatoes. Any other ideas about tasty vegetables?

LOL, Janet. The article didn't mention french fries or potato chips, but they are vegetables and I'm sure it was an oversight. A big seller at the NC State Fair the past couple years has been fried Twinkies. It would take a real stretch to include those, but maybe if they were fried in vegetable oil??

Ok Dale, we loved the pictures of Bridge Day but what we really want is a play by play of your walk, like, how many breaks did you have to take? Did your muscles ache for days after the walk? Was it more strenuous than you had thought it would be? Come on now, I want the details of the pain...

Marilyn, we took one break and that was about halfway back up the mountain. It was my daughter, Sarah's idea, but I quickly seconded the motion. As I think I mentioned, we would have paid a lot of money and may have even taken second mortgages on our houses if we could have found a ride back up the mountain. The bridge and the tiny dots of people looked so far away. We contemplated faking an injury and seeking a mercy ride from one of the very nice state troopers and soldiers who were stationed along the way. I would never have jumped off the bridge, but I would certainly have accepted a cable car ride back up.

I was amazed that I only had very slight soreness the next afternoon. It excited me that I was able to walk that far. Fortunately, noone told me, in advance, how far it was down the hill and back. I could never have done that two months ago - or if I had, they would have needed to have emergency vehicles and oxygen stationed all along the way and a truckload of Bengay waiting at my house the next day. I even walked 5 miles last night. I'm watching for the elderly man at the lake and am going to see if I can take him now. (It is getting more difficult to find someone I can call elderly ) I have started and stopped exercise programs in the past. This time, I eased into it with low expectations and have stayed off the scales. I still have plenty of fat and am months away from being a "body Nazi", but the progress is very exciting.

A side note, I mentioned to Andy that Bridge Day shows great West Virginia off in a very favorable way - showing the incomparable beauty, the impressive bridge, and very nice people wearing shoes, having legs that are both the same length, married to people outside their family and enjoying themselves. I proudly proclaim myself a West Virginian when I talk to people.

Hello Rangers,
Seeing all those photographs of walkers, riders, and jumpers on Bridge Day makes me wish I was there too. However, Biker Chick is not ready for miles of walking like Andy, Dale, and Susie nor is she ready for mountain biking. She is still in training.

If those beautiful pictures have inspired you to walk or ride, you may be considering buying a bike. Let me warn you that it is complicated business. There are many types and styles available including mountain bikes, all-terrain, easy step-through bikes, cruiser bikes, and speed bikes.

First, I considered the mountain bike. Mountain bikes have names such as Iron Horse Warrior, Iron Horse Maverick with descriptions such as brutally efficient, silent as a raging storm, and flies up and down hills. Trying as hard, I couldn’t visualize myself flying up and down the mountains near me with brutal efficiency and silent as a storm. Geez, I didn’t want to join the Marines. I just want to up my metabolism—not fly up and down mountains.

Next, I looked at the all-terrain bikes. “All” combined with another word is usually a good thing. For example, all-beef patty, All American Café and one-size-fits all are a few of my favorites. I looked at the Cannondale, a beastly free rider with nimble pinpoint handling; another was described as a mad free ride monster. Nah, this did not fit me. I am usually fairly sane (debatable) and nimble hasn’t described me for a long time if it ever did.

It was time to consider the easy-step through model. I like the sound of easy. The middle bars on this model are low, allowing for your leg to easily pass over. Ha, talk about false advertising. There was nothing easy about getting on this bike. Forget that.

Ah next, the cruiser bike. Now this sounds really cool. I could hear Gwyneth Patrow and Huey Lewis singing “Cruising Together” in the background. Maybe I could even look like Gwyneth if I bought this bicycle. This bike is described as having modern styling, a comfy saddle; fat tires that roll easy and smooth. Now we’re talking. These are words that I can relate to. Comfy, fat, easy, yeah that’s me. There was just one detail missing. Where are the speeds? The salesman asked if I lived near the beach. In my dreams I thought.

It was time to check out the speed bikes. The choices are extensive. I saw some speed bikes that were described as speed demons, easy pedaling, effortless speed, sensational ride. Now we’re talking. The twenty-one speed Skyliner caught my eye. It is advertised as “Gear up for a leisurely ride.” The deal was done.

After a few months of riding, I am thinking about taking it back because only three speeds work. Slow, slower, and slowest.

Whether you choose a mountain bike, a cruiser, or somewhere in between, Happy Trails.

I just thought of another way to get those extra helpings of vegetables: baked beans with a big strip of bacon across the top right out of the oven!!!!

Corn on the cob???? With lots of butter and salt of course!

Cole slaw? Especially when it's served on top of those Rainelle hot dogs.

collard greens cooked with ham; sweet potato with honey and brown sugar - perhaps a little maple syrup for flavor; don't forget the califlower dripped with melted cheese; how about the corn in the cornbread dipped in fresh buttermilk; fat back in pinto beans....Dale, are Janet and I on the right track here??

Janet and Marilyn, you are definitely on the right track - lots of vegetables disguised to be very tasty!

We used to eat at a local restaurant that had a wonderful buffet. Their vegetables were so good. I assumed that the cook was a master chef. It was fun to eat healthy and for it to be so tasty. One day, we got there early. The staff was putting the final touches on the buffet food. A very large young man with a huge spoon and a bucket of butter came out and plopped (yes, it's a word) two heaping spoons of butter on top of each of the vegetables. After further reflection, I decided that the vegetables tasted more like butter than vegetables and that was why I liked them so much. That was disappointing.

Joan and Andy, the Eating Out exercise didn't work for me. It said I was 59, not 39? You may wonder how I graduated in 1964, but am only 39. I'm still trying to come up with a good explanation when asked that. I welcome any suggestions. Dale

Dale: Is the "Sweet Tomatoes" resturant still there on the north side of Raleigh? It was our favorite place to go.

Hello everyone. It is soooo enjoyable to see the wonderful posts from Fred Young, Wilda Gaye Martin and the replies. I am enjoying them so much. When we started the site, we were hopeful that we could all share some memories and rekindle some friendships. I am thrilled. The site has exceeded our hopes. I am also enjoying meeting some wonderful people. West Virginians have wonderful hearts and a love for their home state. There is no place like home.

It is a credit to our great teachers that such a high percentage of students from our small town became teachers.

Some updates on my walking. I am still at it and continue to be very excited at the prospects of being mobile . Very few ladies with baby carriages catch me now and I compete better against the elderly walkers. I keep them in sight. I have received some more enjoyable comments by e-mail. Elda Utterback Montgomery wrote, "Keep walking! I firmly believe that walking is the key to good health. I lead a hiking group of retired teachers ranging from the age of sixty to seventy-eight, and they amaze me. My neighbor is eighty-five and has fought off cancer and heart problems, which he contributes to hiking the hills and mountains around us about four times a week. His doctors agree with him."

I ask Elda for permission to post her e-mail. She gave permission and followed up with, "Saturday I led a hike for a church in another town. When I left the house, I really did not want to go for the fog was into our valley. Later the sun came out in the hills above Oakland, and it ended up a beautiful hike in the redwoods. It gave me a lot of energy, and I was able to do yard work after I returned. Just keep walking and try to climb a few hills."

Thank you, Elda, for the information and encouragement. I had my annual physical today and my doctor was pleased that my blood pressure has not risen. He encouraged me to keep walking and told me to cut out my sweet iced tea. Cutting out my beloved 3 or 4 iced teas per day saddens me. However, he said that the processed sugar would slow down my weight loss and would increase my appetite. So, it's off to either unsweetened iced tea or tea with Splenda. He said that if I keep walking and lose some weight, I may be able to get off the blood pressure medicine I am on and be medicine free. That will be a great day.

My doctor told me that we can learn a lot from our presidents, most of whom live to their 80's and 90's. They get good physicals, but primarily, they are disciplined about their food intake and exercise. He said that most of us are equipped to live to be 80 or 90, but processed foods, sugars and lack of exercise prevent us from living at the optimum. Interesting.

I have a few regretful words for Susie's and my walk yesterday....

"I WISH I HAD MY CAMERA", this phrase was repeated numerous times during yesterdays walk.

Susie and I started from the Park Center Shopping Center with departure at eleven.....It was a beauitul day with a crisp breeze blowing during our walk....We walked through town stopping at Ronnie Fleshman's office because I needed something to put in my ears because of the cool breeze.....I had forgot my ear muffs along with the camera. A peice or toilet paper did the trick for my ears.

We continued to the end of town where we made a right turn heading toward thirteen street. We started our main walking adventure by going straight up the mountain for several miles on Airport Road. We arrived and ate our lunch at the Airport, which consists of banana bread and water.....We also walked the grass runway of the airport remembering the great times that was given to us by Squire Haynes. CAMERA . Smiles and laughter on our face as we continue

Susie and I left the Airport headed back over the otherside of the mountain with valleys and more hills to climb......It was a wonderful day filled with sunshine and blue sky.......there were so many things I would have loved to shared with you if I only had my camera....wonderful views, the cows in the fields ,,,old barns ...White Deer grazing....The old civil war haunted hospital house in Meadow Bluff.... and so much more....


Susie and I are most appreciative of our accomplishment that God has allowed us to do on this day.....It was a day we will never forget...We never take our hikes for granted...We Are Blessed....

Our trip ended at Sam Black....
Randy was waiting at Sam Black to take us home ...we rolled in to the car...lol....

Susie and I did decide we will catch another beautiful day and take the car to take the pictures........LOL....
