Pudge, I have never attended the Vandall reunions, but would love to go to one. I am curious as to if or how I might be related to your husband? You can email me at PennieZ123@aol.com -- if you wish.

Hello to all those looking for their ancestors. I am related to Sidney Ballengee(1815-?)Great great grandmother. But for now I am looking for the graves of Tinchers from I believe Snakerun road close to Smoot or Bluesulpher. If anyone has time to look in there cemetery books I would be ever so thankful. Samuel Tincher 1718-1791 or Levi Tincher 1810-1886. |

Hi, Sue, I have Sidney Ballengee in my info, born 24 September 1823, daughter of Isaac Ballengee, Jr. and Mary Meadows. Unfortunately, that's all I have on her. Isaac Jr. was my great-great-great grandfather, so that would make us cousins of some kind.
I don't have the Meadow Bluff Cemetery Book, but in the Blue Sulphur book i have the following Tinchers:
April Tincher Baby Tincher Barbara Tincher Cassie Tincher Clovie Tincher Cynthia Tincher Edith Tincher Elden Tincher Ellen Tincher Iva Tincher James Tincher Joe Tincher Lincoln Tincher Lot Tincher Mannie Tincher Otie Tincher Pearl Tincher Violet Tincher Virginia "Jenn" Tincher
If any of these are people you are interested in, let me know and i'll send you whatever info is listed. They are buried in various cemeteries: Church of God, Bryant, Matics, Jess Bennett, Forren, Myles, Jake Bryant, Baker, Mt. Zion.
Levi Tincher is on the 1840 Greenbrier Census, one male age 30-40 (which I assume is Levi). Others listed in the census are Francis, James, and Nicholas. Levi is also on the 1850 census for Greenbrier with these family members: Levi, age 41, Labourer; Lucretia Tincher, age 33, William Tincher, 15, Elias Tincher 10, Joel M. Tincher 6, John M. Tincher 4, Geo W. Tincher 1.
The 1790 census does not exist for Greenbrier but Samuel Tincher is listed on the 1783-1786 tax list for Greenbrier, along with Francis and William Tincher. Janet |

Sue, I am sorry, but neither Samuel nor Levi Tincher are listed in the Meadow Bluff District Cemetery Book.

In the book "Greenbrier Co., WV, Wills 1780-1865", Samuel Tincher's will is listed on page 3. "To William and Francis, sons, Hannah Kinkead, daughter. Gave son William all of his books, except hymn book and William to have tract of land bought from son, Francis. Dated March 15, 1790, probated January 1791. |

Janet and Penny, Thank you for checking. Mrs. Lois Tincher Dorsey published a book called the "Tincher Tribe" that I have input into Reunion(apple softwear). I now have over 6000 enteries but find I do not have loads of dates or locations. Her sources are general and as I browse the census records I find differences and do not know which is correct. Do any of you more experienced searchers have a suggestion?
Janet I can match some of the names you listed such as Lincoln and Lot, Maybe Otie and Iva and of course I have all the other names just cannot match them. When you have time dates and locations would be of great value to me. |

Sue, I've found that when using other people's research there are usually errors in it, sometimes just typos or omissions, etc. A really good genealogist will check facts of other researchers by going to the original record and documenting the fact. Sometimes additional info turns up that way that the first researcher didn't think was important.
PLUS.....census records are notoriously inaccurate. Names misspelled, ages wrong, etc. The only thing census records can document is that people lived in a certain place on a certain date. Birth dates, marriage info, etc. all should be documented with a second source.
I'll start your cemetery info and do as many as I can. I may have to finish up later on.
Lincoln Tincher, buried at Bryant Cemetery, wouldn't you know it--no dates of birth or burial--Spouse of Lot--no marker on grave.
Lot Tincher, buried at Bryant Cemetery, no dates given--Female--Spouse of Lincoln--no marker.
Otie Tincher, buried at Myles Cemetery, b. 1863, d.1947
Edith Tincher, Myles Cemetery, b. 1863, d. 1938
at Bryant Cemetery:
Baby Tincher, no dates, parent--Pearl Cynthia Tincher, no dates, no marker Lincoln & Lot Tincher Pearl Tincher, no dates, parents--Joe & Virginia Virginia "Jenny" Tincher, b. 1869, d. 1950, Spouse--Joe
at Matics Cemetery:
Barbara Tincher, b. May 1 1818, d. Aug 11 1896, spouse--John
at Jess Bennett Cemetery:
Cassie L. Tincher, b. 1904, d. 1989, Elden H. Tincher, b. 1907, d. 1965 Iva F. Tincher, b. May 10, 1886, d. Feb. 6, 1929

Janet, I just now had a chance to check this site. Thank you for so much information. The problem I believe I have with the book most of the information was family donated. Example the wife is listed in the book(daughter gave info)as Delitha and on the death certificate(husband gave info)as Eliza, and the census only gives her middle name. But I wanted to tell you how much help one of your earlier messages was to me. I have been looking for a grandfather for a person attending our Tincher Reunions for years. Could not find him anywhere and Mrs. Dorsey stated in the back of her book "did not trace his family". When I saw the wvculture site I looked, had to read everyone but there he was missed spelled name on the index but was correct on the actual document. His family is in the book just listed as missing children. It feels so great to find information and make a connection, Thank you so much. Sue |

That's great, Sue! I love finding info on families.....I get a big kick out of finding a familiar name in big ole dusty books at the courthouse too.
The WVculture site is great, it's helped me a lot. And as you found out, you have to check EVERYTHING because a name can be different, Peggy can be Margaret, Ballengee can be Balenger, etc. It's a challenge, but it's fun putting the puzzle together. Good luck! Let me know if we can work on anything else together. Janet |

Hello genealogists. I don't know if that is a word or not. I have been enjoying your topic. I also learned how to spell geneaelogy. Jean Carol Painter could have beat me in a spelling bee with that one in the 5th grade, but she couldn't get me on it now.
I noticed quite a few Greenbrier County & U.S. genealogy links on the Greenbrier Historial Society site http://www.greenbrierhistorical.org/links2.html
If you experts wish to start a collection of genealogy links, we will be happy to add them to a genealogy page and link them from the links' page.
