My son plays in the South Eastern Youth Football League. The league is comprised of teams from Western Greenbrier (Rainelle, Rupert, Quinwood, Smoot, and even some Meadow Bridge students), Alderson, Lewisburg, White Sulphur, Ronceverte, Hinton, Union, and Pocahontas County. I am trying to get the powers that be to change the name of the league to the Greenbrier Valley Conference. The name has historical value, is more representive of our area, and flows off of the tongue much more freely than the SEYFL. I have pointed out the fact that when all of these areas supported their own high schools, they were all members of the GVC or the GVAC. Someone has opposed the idea because they say Hinton, Union, and Pocahontas are not in the Greenbrier Valley. I've pointed out that the Greenbrier River flows south through Marlinton into Greenbrier County, through the northwest corner of Monroe County, and joins the New River just north of Hinton. In fact, the Western Greenbrier areas are the furthest removed from the Greenbrier River. Can any of you verify the actual members of the old Greenbrier Valley Conference? I am sure Marlinton, White Sulphur, Lewisburg, Greenbrier (Ronceverte), Alderson, Rainelle, Rupert, Crichton, Smoot, and Hinton were members. What about Union?

I think it is strange to reply to your own topic when nobody else has, but I want to keep the information in the pertinent thread. Anyhow, this statement "1933 – Won the Greenbrier Valley Championship in football; co-champs in 1946; champs again in 1951." at this link http://www.rainellereunion.com/timeline.html got me wondering. Weren't the Rangers GVC champions in 1961 (10-0, no playoffs) and 1962 (10-0, State Champs) also? The giant 1962 picture in the gym says GVAC Champs. Aren't the GVC and the GVAC the same thing?

Mike: my other half remembers it being Rupert, Rainelle, Alderson, Crichton, Lewisburg, White Sulphur, Frankfort, Smoot (football). He remembers it being Greenbrier County Schools. He doesn't think Meadow Bridge was in the GVC. He is a Rupert alumni. When one of the RHS fellows who has a good memory checks in on this board, I'm sure you will get an answer. It's ok if you talk to yourself on here, we all do it sometimes! then suddenly, out of the blue, someone responds.

I went to the Gbr. West at Meadow Bridge basketball game last night (MB won 43-40...West suffered from a horrible non-call at game's end...they should've been on the line with three free throws with no time on the clock...reminds me of what RHS vs MBHS must've been like) and the Wildcats have a trophy denoting their 1958 GVAC Championship in football prominently displayed in their case. There may have been more, but that was MB's state championship year and it was beside their (two 1958) state championship trophies.
