Hello, everyone, I'm taking a shot in the dark to see if anyone else is interested in discussing genealogy. I have info on Rainelle families of Ballengee, Burdette, Amick, Tuck, Humphries, Dorseys and MANY others.....too numerous to mention...LOL . If anyone wants to discuss genealogy, how to get started working on your family history, etc., just write back.

Hi, Janet We share a common interest---genealogy. I have some info on the following surnames: Zickafoose/Zicafoose/Zickefoose, Gwinn, Fox, Harrah, Vandall, Buzzard, Simms and a few more. I would be very happy to share what information I do have with anyone. My dear friends in Rainelle always laugh at me, because when I come to WV, I always visit at least six cemeteries before I leave. I love searching for the graves of my ancestors or finding lost graves for others. I tell my friends the reason I spend so much time in the cemeteries is that I just haven't found my favorite spot---yet. My fascination for cemeteries began when I was about three years old and my great great Aunt Octavia Simms showed me how to put flowers on the graves.

I also like to search my ancestry. I research Utterback, McCallister, Thomas, Puckett, and Lambert. I started with this in the mid-80's.
Next weekend, I plan to attend a Clan Gathering for the McAlister Clan here in Nashville. I have not been to one of their gatherings and look forward to getting into the genealogy room and finding more information, as well as meeting distant, distant cousins.

My husband thinks it's funny that I ask for "cemetery books" for Christmas. He says I have the best collection of cemetery books in 3 counties. LOL. |

I have 6 of the cemetery books published by the Greenbrier Historical Society if anyone wants a look up. I also have several other census records, etc. and can tell you how to use the internet to look up census records if you're interested. |

Evelyn, I am a descendant of Crawford Puckett, SR. and Sarah Ennis. Is this your Puckett line? Also, were you able to trace the Utterbacks back to Germany? I am sure you will have a wonderful time with your McAlister cousins---have fun! Pennie |

Janet-- Could you tell me how to find Fayette County census records on-line? I do have two of the Greenbrier County Cemetery books (Meadow Bluff and Blue Sulpur) and also Larry Shuck's books on the births, marriages, and deaths in Greenbrier County. I would be happy to do look-ups for anyone. Thank you so much for your help! Pennie |

There is a website sponsored by Heritage Quest which I access through my local library. You may be able to go to the local library and use their computer to access the site, or my library furnished me with a password that I use when I access the site from the library's website. So I can log onto the Smyth-Bland Regional library site, click on Heritage Quest and use the password to go right to the census records.
You may search most census years by last name and state and county. For some years, such as 1930 (which has not yet been indexed), you have to "browse" which means you select the census year, the state, the county, and then the district (all have drop down menus), and then you may read through the actual census records page by page. This is kind of burdensome if you're reading 60 pages of a district, but it works to find people when you're not really sure where they lived, etc.
I'm not sure where you live, but if you're local library doesn't offer Heritage Quest as a service, email me jlestep@smyth.net, and I'll clue you in on my library's website, password etc.
I have Greenbrier Cemetery Books--Falling Spring, Frankford, Blue Sulhpur, Anthony Creek, Williamsburg, and Lewisburg.

Pennie, I'm afraid that my Puckett line is rather a mystery. My great grandfather was from Tazewell Co. or Giles Co. VA. The family story goes that he went west to seek fame and fortune and was never heard from again. His name was Phillip Wesley Puckett. Do you have any family line with that name? I have found where they married but never what happened to him etc.
Thanks. |

Hi, Evelyn, I don't know if any of these are your philip Puckett, but i found Philip Puckett on the 1920 census in Clark Co., KY and Laurens, SC. I also found Philip W. Puckett in Craig Co., VA in the 1880 census. He was age 22. Let me know if you want the records.
Also a good internet source is www.wvculture.org for death records. Go to the site, click on "archives and history" at the top of the page, and then "vital research records" on the right hand. You can search for death records from certain years, and birth and marriage records from some counties. I found my grandfather's death record here, something I'd looked for for more than 10 years. |

Connard, I have tons of info on the Esteps. A good site for this family is www.homestead.com/estepconnections and www.homestead.com/thomasestep. My husband is descended from the Thomas Estep who settled in Maryland (as are a VERY large number of Esteps). If you want more info on Estep, let me know something about your parents, grandparents, etc. I'll see if I have them in my info. |
