Today I made a phone call to the newspaper reporter that had written about the moving of a caboose......I left a message and sent an email wanting to learn more about this move,,,,asking for the name of the person who purchased this caboose..This was placed on our discussion board .....by Janet Ballengee...thank you Janet....
http://www.tricities.com/tristate/tri/news.apx.-content-articles-TRI-2006-03-20-0014.html..
Then I googled in CSX,,,and found the above link....as you can see our caboose is among the photos in this site...Number 903505.... I do not know where it was located at the time of the picture..
Very interesting...

Andy: Take a look at this site, please. http://www.cohs.org/index.htm Click on “search” and then “online info request” and then “fill out an info request form”. I would recommend you try this. Won’t hurt and it appears this site is willing to assist. Very detail web site. I’m still viewing but got so excited I wanted to contact you.
I noticed this one has an address in Clifton Forge, VA. I’m still searching for official C&O sites.

I sent an email to Mike McQuain at the reunion site asking if he still worked for the railroad and did he have any ideas to how we could possibly obtain this caboose. No answer yet. |

Caboose update....
Mr. Long the person that purchased the caboose retuned my phone call this evening.
He purchased the caboose for fifteen thousand dollars plus a cost of five thousand dollars to move the caboose three hours away.
He said one of the major problems of buying this caboose was finding a piece of track to rest it on......
He also suggested as Chris had said to obtain the caboose through an organization.. go with the approach of donation to the town...Not many org.s left in Rainelle....

Andy,
Charles Nester has ridden the caboose many, many times. He told me that it is going for salvage and the inside is in pretty poor shape. However, it is not beyond repair. Someone else in Rainelle had inquired about the caboose as a possible cabin, but declined to pay the salvage price which the Chessie had requested. Do you want me to try and find out the salvage price?
My husband and Charles both agree that the Chessie would most ikely agree to donate the caboose to the City of Rainelle--if you have the backing of city officials. The Chessie would want to give up all liabilities and they would move it to any siding along the railroad. Charles said that in the past there was a caboose near the depot and it would be easy to place a siding there for this caboose.
Railroads have been known to donate the caboose, the sidings which include the rail, ties and all the labor involved. It isn't an impossible dream, but it means a lot of cooperation from many, many people.
My husband has yet to hear from the Chessie regarding his last inquiries regarding the caboose. The Chessie has a new General Manager for the region. If you want my husband to continue to see if the caboose can be donated, please let me know. |

Please Penny continue to do whatever you think to try to help save the Chessie.....
Thank you and your husband in this gallant effort to save the Chessie....
Again I do not know how much support there will be in Rainelle for someone to take this project on.....I will continue to ask around .....Maybe we can suggest to Ronnie Fleshman the president of the Rainelle Park Board...Knowing his plate is full we must encourage him to do this......I will call him....

Andy: I think you or someone needs to contact the mayor and or city council either directly or indirectly seeking the Towns support. If you can get a plan set, you are looking for Rainelle to be the beneficiary of the project pushing the fact it is not going to cost the town any money. Always keeping in mind you want to acquire the caboose as a donation. The caboose would be a “historical marker” of Rainelle’s past. Greenbrier County Historical Society could be contacted for direction and support. Locate the elected official from your district in Charleston contact them and ask for direction and support. The senators and representatives in Washington for direction and support.
Whom ever you contact, I would suggest you ask for direction they can give you. Then get them to support your efforts. You want to make it clear from the beginning you are not asking for money. You want their position, name, influence, etc. to make this happen. You want to express “we want this project to be a major part of the 2007 Reunion”.
If you can gain support of any elected officials, ask would they come be a guest speaker at the reunion.
I believe it is more creditable that you or someone living in Rainelle be the contact due to the fact this is a Rainelle project and you live there. If you mail any letters, can you use Rainelle Reunion stationary? If you contact anyone via email, send (attach) them a picture or two of the caboose. That makes it more real and personal. Invite them to review the Rainelle Reunion web site.

Wow, my favorite topic and it hasn’t been posted to since I last noted my thoughts on Saturday, 4/8. I find it difficult to imagine everyone going to sleep at the keyboard all at the same time.

OK, I'm queen of the internet! These sites are just a few that have info about a caboose that has been transformed into a museum of some kind.
I have some ideas: Once the caboose is moved to its new location, we could have a weekend of Rainelle HS alums working to upgrade, clean etc. I'm not much on carpenter work, but I can clean, sweep, paint, etc. Anyone who could make it to Rainelle could help work on the caboose to repair and restore it.
Here's another idea: How about a Railroad Festival in Rainelle? Southwest Virginia has so many festivals it gets a bit ridiculous at times, but they are VERY successful at bringing thousands of people to a town for a week, a weekend, etc. Good for the economy.
My dad worked on the railroad and LOVED the trains. He could tell you about all the engines, etc. A railroad musuem in Rainelle would be a wonderful collection of the history of Rainelle and how the railroad contributed to it.
I have some memorabilia of the railroad at Rainelle that were my dad's. What do you guys think? I'm great at thinking up work for other people to do..... |

I have been "indisposed" for 6 days but am here now. Janet, that is a good idea. Most of us have had parents or relatives associated with the railroad in some way. I think that would be such an honor to our Rainelle heritage and our forefathers. "The C&O Railroad and Meadow River Lumber Company Museum". People came from all over the world to see the Meadow River Lumber Company when it was in existence. "If you build it, they will come..." (your turn Chris...) |
