The 1947 yearbook is up, thanks to a loan by Joan Burns and Gerry Mitchell's great scanning work. Thank you, Joan and Gerry.

The yearbook starts sadly by lovingly remembering 11 Ranger heroes who lost their lives in WW II. The Veterans who retruned are also honored. One of them is Sgt. David McClung. He appears to be the teacher from whom many of us learned so much. The classes' parents were also honored. One of the veterans, Eddie Zopp, also became the senior class president -- and was voted "Best Legs". Other categories included "Chewing Gum Champ" and "Best Figure", which was won by a girl this year. The football team was very good. Basketball scores weren't listed. This is a very enjoyable yearbook with lots of great photos.

1947 was an interesting year. In the Truman Doctrine, Harry Truman, asked Congress for $400 million in military and economic assistance for Turkey and Greece. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1947 has great info on 1947.

We hope you enjoy the yearbook: http://www.rainellereunion.com/47.html

The 1955 yearbook is up thanks to a loan by Karen Henson and scanning by Gerry Mitchell. This is an interesting yearbook. The men were wearing blue jeans with the cuffs rolled up one roll. The girls, including the cheerleaders, wore long skirts and white bobby socks. The band looks impressive. One of our favorite teachers, Don Smith, was a senior that year. The Ranger on a horse (someone mentioned his name on the board and I have forgotten) is pictured.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was the president. Winston Churchhill resigned that year. You can find more facts at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955

Enjoy the yearbook at http://www.rainellereunion.com/55.html

Hello everyone. Gerry has been working hard with his scanning and we will be adding more photos to the Website this week.

Gary sent some tips for AOL users who have difficulty viewing some of the yearbooks or are not seeing the freshest versions of pages. The instructions are: GO TO "SETTING" ON THE MAIN AOL PAGE, GO TO "INTERNET OPTIONS" ON THE MENU SHOWN, GO TO "CLEAR FOOTPRINTS" AND "FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS" AND THEN TRY THE WEBSITE AGAIN. IT SHOULD WORK AFTER THAT FOOTPRINT CLEARING IS DONE. Please write to gerry.mitchell@rainellereunion.com if you have questions. Dale

June 16-17 are the big dates for our 50th reunion and we are looking forward to it. We will have about 20 classmates in attendance for a Dutch treat dinner on Friday night at Linda's in Sam Black and a picnic at the home of Calvin Simmons on Sat. night. If I have decent pictures, I will try to share them with you.

Chris: Where are you? Bring that laughter back! We need it! Connard and Mary Jane, we miss your humor and your memories. I click on here to read the fun stuff! "life's not the same
since you been gone, the forums not funny, without your songs"... well, not entirely, we really enjoy all the pictures and Andy's hard work.

Hello everyone,

Among many items Gerry has scanned is the 1927 yearbook. I hope, in the next few days, to catch up with the scans he has sent. This yearbook looks more like a home photo book than a yearbook. The text appears to have been prepared on a typewriter. One of the pages discusses the community's contributions to help equip the football team.

Gerry did a great job preserving the look and feel of it. To view this interesting and historic yearbook, see http://www.rainellereunion.com/25-29.html

Gerry also scanned a 1947 Mountain Ranger which gives interesting information on how the football field was built by an impressive community effort. To read the article, visit http://www.rainellereunion.com/photos.html#football_field

Another treat - Gerry painstakingly scanned the 194 page 1969 Greensbrier West yearbook. We wanted to remember those who were Rangers up until their last few years of high school. You can enjoy the book at: http://www.rainellereunion.com/69.html

Kenneth Napier recommended a very good topic. We have added the topic to the links page: http://www.rainellereunion.com/links.html#books

Books, Articles, Periodicals About Rainelle - Some Are For Sale At Amazon, Ebay & Other Sites. We welcome input on sources. This topic was recommended by Kenneth Napier. These and Rainelle photo mugs from Kodak or Photoworks (using photos from the Website or other sources) make great gifts!

- West Virginia's Last Logging Railroad -the Meadow River Lumber Company. Author: Philip V Bagdon. Complete history of West Virginias largest logging railroad - Google Search $12.97 at Amazon.

- Goldenseal, Vol 17, No. 4, Winter 1991, with the interior of the Rainelle Methodist Church on the cover. Several photos are included. This may be difficult to find.

- Nothing but Hardwood - The Meadow River Lumber Company," by Ben Crookshanks, is the story of the Raine brothers and their lumber enterprise, photos included. This may be another difficult one to find.

We welcome your input on sources or additional information on these items, plus any others we should add to the historical links section.

Dale:

I have a copy of Vol. 17, No. 4 Winter 1991 of Goldenseal ... shall I forward it to Gerry to scan the cover of the church and the MRLC article Nothing but Hardwood? As Kenneth noted, it may be difficult to find ... the current issue has a list of available back issues and this was not listed ... however, never underestimate Amazon!

Too, I have a copy of October 1998 Wonderful West Virginia which includes an article "The Chestnut's Blight of Passage" and a photo of the interior of First United Methodist Church with the chestnut paneling.

I have a subcription to both of the above publications...most enjoyable and good West Virginia history lessons.
