Gerry Mitchell has scanned a 1949 yearbook that was loaned by Kenneth Napier. Thank you again, Gerry and Kenneth. The Class of 49 was enjoying getting into the new building and out of the "firetrap". Other than losses to GMS, the football team had a great year, winning all the other games. They had a pretty good basketball season too - winning a squeaker against Rupert 69-38. Squeaker may not be the best word. The yearbook is interesting. The Rainelle Department Store was still running full page ads. The print is Times Roman typewriter type fonts. Thankfully, the war has been over for a while and life was more normal: http://www.rainellereunion.com/49.html

Rita Curd Bender sent a great photo of the Class of '64 at a 1974 reunion at The Ponderosa (I was in this class). Several of us have been enjoying it and having fun laughing at our John Travolota-like hair styles & clothes. We remarked that Ed Smith could have jumped on stage with John on the Saturday Night Fever movie. We want to get Ken Altizer's plaid jacket for the Rainelle High School museum if we ever build one.
For another look at yesteryear, see: http://www.rainellereunion.com/64.html#1974_reunion

Hello everyone, Thanks to Kenneth Napier's loan of five yearbooks and Gerry's continued, wonderful scanning, the 1950 yearbook is online at http://www.rainellereunion.com/50.html This is another interesting yearbook. The football players still didn't wear facemasks. The basketball shorts were indeed short. The cheerleaders skirts were still long. A young-looking Davy McClung was the faculty advisor. The typing class was pounding on those Underwoods. (I assume they were Underwoods.) A Royal Crown Cola machine is featured in the center of one page. The Rainelle Department Store took their usual full-page ad.
The online museum continues to grow.
Gerry will soon scan the 51 and 52 yearbooks. Ron Fleshman loaned us the 65 and 66 yearbooks. Gerry will scan them in the future.
We need the following yearbooks: 46, 47, 54, 55, 56 (the remainder of it), 67, 68. If there are yearbooks, newspapers or other yearbook-type booklets prior to 1941, we would love to add them. If you have any ideas where to get them and can send them to Gerry, it will be very helpful to completing the yearbook portion of the site.
Thank you, Dale Dale Tincher - Class of 64 919-272-8052 dale.tincher@rainellereunion.com |

Hello everyone, thanks to Kenneth Napier's yearbook loan and more great scanning from Gerry Mitchell, the 1951 yearbook is up: http://www.rainellereunion.com/51.html
This is an interesting yearbook.
I would love to know if homecoming queen and valedictorian Orvetta Puckett was "Orph" Puckett's daughter if someone can tell me. I noticed that her nickname was "Orph" so she most likely is. I bought my first bicycle, the money earned from money from selling blackberries, from Orph. It had belonged to one of his daughters.
The Class of 64 will enjoy a cute photo of the 64 class's 2nd grade class taken in 1954 - http://www.rainellereunion.com/64.html

More progress. Kenneth Napier's 1952 yearbook has been scanned by Gerry. This is another interesting yearbook. The '52 class had one of Rainelle's best football teams, going undefeated and winning the 1951 Greenbrier Conference football championship!! Seniors include one of our discussion board posters/readers, Kenneth Napier and Benny Lepley, who became a football coach that some of us later Rangers also knew. Enjoy the yearbook at http://www.rainellereunion.com/52.html Dale

Hello everyone. The 1965 yearbook is online, thanks to Gerry's painstaking scanning and Ron Fleshman supplying the yearbook. Thank you, Gerry and Ron!
This was one of the largest yearbooks to date with 97 pages. The yearbook is interesting. Frequent discussion board posters Marilyn Lewis Bennett, Dena Carper Williams and George Boley are in this book, as is Pennie Zickafoose Burnett, who has been very helpful in submitting information. The book was dedicated to Mrs. Pearl Kessler. Something interesting is that frequent contributor, Patty Cox Osborne and Jerry Osborne have their arms interlocked and are two of the Homecoming Royalty Escorts. Hmm. I wonder if this was the start of something. We hope you enjoy this excellent class: http://www.rainellereunion.com/65.html

Hello everyone. I checked the Website statistics for info to pass along to you. Google, MSN, AOL and Yahoo have found us. I submitted the site to Google, but not the others. If you type rainelle reunion into Google, you will see the site listed.
The activity is quite good, as we suspected. The site receives more than 220 visits per day. The visitors typically visit 3 paqes after they enter. I realize that some people visit more than once per day. I visit a couple times per day. Dale

The 1966 yearbook is on-line. Thanks once again, Gerry for your great work and thank you, Ron Fleshman, for loaning us the yearbook. Your info, Gerry not only scans the photos, he crops (cuts out unneeded areas (e.g., edges)) and enhances many of the photos to improve the quality.
The 66 yearbook was dedicated to Ms. Leone Holsberry. Ms. Holsberry spent many years teaching Rangers and was highly regarded. Discussion board posters Randy Clower and Dr. Tom Rider were seniors. Ron Fleshman, who was kind enough to loan the yearbook, is pictured. One of the two "Know Your State" delegates is frequent poster Donnie Puckett.
I have to admit that I particularly enjoyed this one since my brother Donnie was a senior and my younger brother and sister pictured in the grade school, as are many friends, neighbors and relatives.
We hope you enjoy it: http://www.rainellereunion.com/66.html

Hello everyone, some great news!! The 1968 yearbook is on line. It is a treasure trove of memories. Thank you, Gerry Mitchell, for your great scanning work and Andy Aide Pendleton for locating the yearbook. I'm not sure who loaned it to us, but I will publish their name when I find out. Not only did the yearbook include the Class of '68, a history section lists information from the early years along with the names of all the seniors from prior years, including a very nice photo of the Class of '31.
The yearbook was dedicated to hard-working Mrs. Virginia Meadows. The class had a lot of activities, school spirit and very good sports teams that completed a fine tradition by, once again, thumping Rupert.

Hello everyone, We have another yearbook up. The 1954 yearbook was kindly loaned by Joan Morehouse and scanned by Gerry Mitchell. The yearbook was dedicated to Mrs. M. M. Townley. Page 17 has Mr. Coffman speaking into what is probably a transistorized speaker system or perhaps a phone system - probably a speaker system. Hopefully, one of the 50's classmates can tell us. Page 18 pictures a young Miss West, Mr. Davy McClung and several other teachers. Page 46 has an East Rainelle banner. The band looks impressive. J&J Supermarket has a nice ad with photos of the staff on page 84, as does Crowder Drug on page 82. Enjoy: http://www.rainellereunion.com/54.html

Hello everyone, thanks to a loan of the yearbook by J.W. Puckett and more excellent scanning work by Gerry Mitchell, we now have the '67 yearbook on line. I enjoyed seeing many friends in this one. This is a large yearbook of 98 pages. Frequent poster Donnie Puckett is pictured several times. We hope you enjoy it: http://www.rainellereunion.com/67.html
This class, unfortunately, lost several members, many of them quite youg when they passed away. Gerry sent their photos and they are placed on the In Memoriam page: http://www.rainellereunion.com/in-memoriam.html Dale

Hello everyone, I was out of town most of the week, but Gerry Mitchell continued to work hard, scanning 4 new yearbooks, plus scanning some extremely interesting materials loaned by Terry Clower. Terry also loaned the 1939 yearbook. I will be uploading & posting the links to all of this material this evening and tomorrow. You can look forward to the years 39, 46, 47, 55.
The first yearbook is 1939. Some quick math tells us it is 67 years old. The front page and a few pictures are missing. Gerry made a generic front page. We are very pleased to have it regardless of a few flaws due to age. The photos are small, but easily viewable.
A new school, named Rupert High School, opened and took some of the former Rainelle students. The football team lost the first three games (one to Dunbar), then came on strong to win with overall total scores of 187 to 12. You will enjoy viewing the clothing and events.
This was an interesting year. During this year, Albert Einstein wrote to President Franklin Roosevelt about developing the Atomic Bomb using Uranium. This led to the creation of the Manhattan Project. August 17 - The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland, premieres at the Capitol Theater in New York City. August 23 - Hitler and Stalin divide eastern Europe between themselves. Finland, the Baltic states and eastern Poland to the USSR. Western Poland to Germany (Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact). World War II began.
A good 1939 link (from which the above came) is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1939
To view the yearbook, see the 1939 page: http://www.rainellereunion.com/38-40.html

The 1946 yearbook is up, thanks to a yearbook loan by Joan Burns who loaned it to Andy Aide Pendleton and Gerry Mitchell's excellent scanning. This was a difficult book to scan due to the way the pages were laid out, but Gerry got it done. Gerry pointed out to me that we finally verified when RHS was built by reading this yearbook. Construction started in 1944 and the school was completed in 1946. WW II had concluded not long ago. This year is special to my Class of '64 because many the construction of many of us was also completed in 1946 and the post-war Baby Boom was on.
The Class of '46 had an excellent football team, including Bob Zopp, and lost only one game by 6-0, while outscoring opponents 180 to 45. The basketball team was also excellent, returning many players from the 1945 team that won the Greenbrier Valley Conference championship. The basketball team was undefeated at the time the yearbook was published. You will enjoy the basketball and football uniforms. The Popularity Contest section had designations such as "Biggest Mouth", "Prettiest Hair" (won by Sammy Gilkerson) and Best Figure (won by a male??)
Harry Truman was the president. A good link http://www.infoplease.com/year/1946.html gives a lot of information, including this item, "The US Army makes radar contact with the moon for the first time."
Enjoy the yearbook at: http://www.rainellereunion.com/46.html
