Hello Classmates,
A few pictures Susie Weber Minturn and I had taken today on our usual walk ....We hope you enjoy !!

One of the picture is a plaque in memory of our Rainelle principal Mr. Dale Ocheltree. He was the best principal any student could ever have known, Mr. Ocheltree loved his school and his students..HE CARED He was always fair and steadfast in his duties. Students, teachers, and parents always respected Mr. Ocheltree for his wisdom and knowledge. We all remember we were not allowed to walk on the grass or across the new gym floor without our tennis shoes on..And no one did...During our '64 class picture we were allowed to take the picture on the lawn in front of the school...I was most honored to be able to stand on Mr. Ocheltree's lawn...TRUE...
Another picture was of our wonderful music teacher and band director Mr Harold Johnson. He had the best and most outstanding band any school could ever ask for.. He was a perfectionist in the appearance of his band and it showed..on a personal note I was not musicially inclined I was never able to sing in his all county chorus until my senior year....(honestly, I would not let me go either)..Mr Johnson said, "Andy, you can go if you promise just to move your lips and pretend to sing"....Then he gave me a great big smile..I was great at pretending to sing......Everyone loved Mr. Johnson ...
Our Rainelle Teachers were all special...

The class of l956 was the first for Dale Ocheltree at Rainelle. He was a great change from Roy Coffman. Harold Johnson graduated in the class of 1956. He loved music so much that I know he must have been a great band and chorus director.

Evelyn, I have heard so much about Mr. Coffman. He was a speaker at our 1992 reunion, but I never had the pleasure of meeting him. I was wondering what were the major differences between the two or fond memories (maybe not so fond ) you may recall of Mr. Coffman?

Roy Coffman was one of the kindest, "child friendly" persons I've ever met in the school system. He had a way of dealing with young people that did not require fear or an iron fist. Mr. Ocheltree had a totally different approach but he succeeded in his own way. Mr. Coffman counseled with young people, Mr. Ocheltree expected results. Both methods seemed to work...this could be a very interesting topic...input here anyone?? |

I recall Mr.Coffman as a very stern person but a very fair person,he also put the fear in me of not wanting to visit him in his office. Does anyone recall his Glasses always sliding down on his nose and pushing them back. very annoying habit to watch. I liked him a lot. Is he still alive ? |

My memories of Mr. Coffman are of a very stern person that rarely smiled. Yes, his glasses slipped on his nose all the time and he had a bad habit of readjusting them with his middle finger which drove the students nuts. We didn't get by with much and unfortunately I did have some occasions that I was subject to his discipline (such as skipping school). He was certainly not a mean person but he did demand respect and we gave it! Mr. Ocheltree was much more likely to chat with you whereas Mr. Coffman seemed to deal strictly in school matters. I know I thought Mr. Coffman was old as the hills. I believe Mr. Coffman is still alive..anyone know?

Does anyone know Rex Adams? I got this information from a website that lists famous West Virginians. http://members.aol.com/jeff560/wv-fam.html
quote: Rex D. Adams is currently the Dean of the Business School at Duke University and previously was a Vice President of Mobil Oil Corporation. He is a Rhodes Scholar and was Academic All-American in football at Duke in 1961. He is a native of Rainelle.

I last saw Mr Coffman about 12 years ago in Lewisburg. He stood straight, still smiled, and carried on a good conversation. He was always strict but we learned not to complain about him or any other teacher at the supper table: Mother and Dad alwayssupported the faculty. And they were probably right. I remember Mr Coffman opening up the gym for basketball practice on Sunday afternoons for either the 5th or 6th graders. Two conditions: right kind of shoes and you had to have gone to Sunday School (the ACLU would have loved it!). He was the only coach and insisted on us learning the correct way (HIS way) to dribble, pass, and shoot. Does anyone recall when Bruno Snider was on the faculty and the "events" associated with his car, which was parked along the east side of the school? Or when his classroom had the egg stain on the wall above the black board? (No, not me; we were in the class coming in next and Mr Coffman had kept the previous class in place.) Yes, those were the days, my friend. |
