Gerry located and scanned an interesting article about Clear Creek Coal, a mining town built around WW II. This will bring back some memories. He said his mom and dad had taken him to it to show him what had once been a "state of the art" town for its time. The article is interesting. It states that "miner's homes are brick and tile construction with every modern appointment, e.g., bathrooms, hot and cold water, electricity", etc. Can you imagine living in that kind of luxury? Enjoy the article and photos at http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.2htp5z1o&x=0&y=-dhvrfo

You may remember Bobby Ayers who sent some very interesting before and after photos of the Rainelle area - http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.78ox36ck&x=0&y=-wt46uo He and Gerry Mitchell have been communicating and Bobby has been kind enough to send some additional photos for our collections. We asked Bobby to let us know more about what he is doing for the area so we could put it on the discussion board. Bobby described his venture as follows:
"THEN AND NOW" VOLUME I BY BOBBY AYERS II
"Then and Now", is a book of towns in Fayette and Greenbrier counties. They are collections of research done by Bobby Ayers II. Included are news stories and pictures from the early 1900's through today. Older photos are compared to the same sights of today. For instance a picture from main street Thurmond in 1915 will be compared to main street Thurmond of today from the same angle. Other photos are of archival nature such as the interior of Prince Station. Many of the places such as the Qunnimont Hotel and Thurmond hotel are no longer standing.
The towns included in this book are Layland, Danese, Quinnimont, Prince and Thurmond. The bulk of this volume is from Layland due to the 1915 mine explosion (the largest in Fayette history) but there is also a wealth of info. and pictures of the other towns. Thebook is nearly 100 pages and price is $25 a book; if you are interested or have any questions please contact me at bobby.ayers@rainellereunion.com I am currently working on volume two which will include; Rainelle, Rupert, Springdale, Meadow Bridge, Beelick Knob, and Hinton. Thank you.
Bobby G. Ayers II

J.L. Hosberry sent some interesting historical photos. One was his mother's (Leone Beattie (Holsberry)) 1928 high school diploma). Another is a 1930 Rainelle Class and another is a 1932-33 class. The signature on the back of the class pictures was Helen Lanham's. She was either the principal George Lanham's daughter or wife who taught at Rainelle. Enjoy them at http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.a493r8zw&x=0&y=m7hky4

Hello everyone, Gerry Mitchell has made some wonderful updates, additions and improvements to several of the slide shows that are listed on the discussion board and photos page. Thank you, Gerry. I have been out of town a lot lately and have not been able to keep up with his updates. I will let you know that some of the additions include "Rainelle in 2006 by Gerry Mitchell - Kodak" under Current Photos on http://www.rainellereunion.com/photos.html Andy and Rita Curd Bender will be helping list some of Gerry's updates. Later, I will update the photos page with his enhancements. Dale

I'm no construction engineer, but I think the it's amazing that the brick walls are still standing. It seems to me that the brick work is solid and sound from the pictures....no missing mortar, bricks still intact, even though the inside structure is all gone! Those are some HUGE steel beams to have been constructed in the 1930s. |
