How many of you are from this area of Rainelle? The little village of gray houses that were rented from the railroad by the employess. It seems to me that we paid $25-35 a month for our house. There were two rows of houses on the upper side next to RT 20 and five house below the railroad tracks. We had a little two bedroom house, kitchen, dining room, living room and bath with front and back porches. They certainly were not fancy by any means. About 1952? the railroad decided they would remodel the houses and allowed the renters to designate how they wanted their house remodeled. They were much better after that but still not "must have" housing.

We moved to Rainelle in 1946, I think. I was in the second grade, Alva in the 4th and Elda in the 5th.

From daylight until dark you would find children playing in the street/alley on the upper level. It was so much fun for us because we had come from a farm in Alderson and now we always had someone to play with. Our Dad was quite strict so we would stand on the front porch, wave to the train as it passed and hit the street. We were a tight knit group, walked to school together, traded comic books, went as groups to the movies in East Rainelle.

Who remembers all the families in that area? The children? Let's talk C & O town. You all have been too quiet too long.

Evelyn

Evelyn, thanks for starting the topic on C&O town. I was born in one of the small houses across the street from where Livelys lived. It was a great place to grow up everyone knew everyone and all the ladies used to get together and make apple butter and everyone shared theirr joys and sorrows, we were one big family. I can remember the Scots, Camps, Dicksons, Camps, Willards, Jones, Postems, Mans, Smiths,Carons, Johnsons, Marshburns, Buchanans,Yvonne and Paula Scott, and there were so many more over the years. I can remember after supper each evening all the kids would gather under the street lights and play games, we didn't have a worry in the world. We lived in the little house until I graduated from High School the we moved to Lily Park. Those were the good old days.
Hope to hear from more friends who grew up in C&O Town

These are names of families that I remember from various years in our "C & O Town".
Moton, Dickson, Scott, Waugh, Rogers, McQuain, Jennings, Shinn, Wells, Paxton, Holliday, Whisman, Bottomley

Johnson, McCall, Vance, Jones, Corron, McCombs, Posten, Utterback, Draper, Lively, Smith, Mann, Johnson, Camp

Lyons, Buchannon, Riffe, Ross, Voss

Toward Lilly Land (now Park) there was a gas station that owned by Mr. Simms and Wade Hunter (I think). They sold all the things kids loved like ice cream, pop, candy etc. This was in the days a nickel would buy any of those. We could charge treats there and Daddy would go on payday to take care of the bill.

Nice memories.

I do remember some of the names you mentioned....!!!! Thank you !!!

I remember Mr. George Simms and his service station very well....

My own children would walk to Simms service station to ride the bus to school....One time my daughter had left one her school books at home. I quickly called the service station to see if the bus had left.....Mr. Simms answered the phone....I said in a quick tone "Mr. Simms has the bus picked up the kids"...he replied in his pleasant voice, "I will check".....I heard him call to the children saying "hey kids has the school bus left."

A smile for the day......

Andy
