Hello, everyone, I'm taking a shot in the dark to see if anyone else is interested in discussing genealogy. I have info on Rainelle families of Ballengee, Burdette, Amick, Tuck, Humphries, Dorseys and MANY others.....too numerous to mention...LOL . If anyone wants to discuss genealogy, how to get started working on your family history, etc., just write back.

Connard,
Wanda and Howard live on Gray Gables Road near Sam Black Church. She is the class contact person for the Class of '55 and she and Howard attend our reunion planning meetings.

I was looking one time as to where my mother's mother, Ada Kincaid, plot was located. Her plot is located at the End of the Trail Cemetery. I did go directly to Wallace and Wallace funeral home, They were able to do some research and found my grandmother's funeral arrangemtment. The records date back to the late 40's.
The records have all the living realatives at that time and the deceased relatives listed, etc. It was amazing the records that they have kept throughout the years without a computer.

I am sure most of you have already gone that route, just a thought ......

Hi, Joel, I unfortunately have not taken that pledge about only working on genealogy 10 hours a month. Perhaps I should.

I am not able to identify any of the people you wrote about, but I do know that Grace Taylor (mother of Charlie Taylor), Goldie Goddard, Mrs. Tom Falls (grandmother of Jerry Falls), and I think also J. A. Carter were members of Sewell Valley Church. They all lived very close to the church. Sometimes one small bit of info will lead to another bit of info and eventually to the information you need.

I have spent several years researching my family. My dad was Dayton "Blake" Mason of Rupert, son of Walter R. and Pruda Mason. My mom was Kathleen Jones of McRoss/East Rainelle, daughter of Harry and Alta Osborne Jones. I have completed all the work on the various generations that I care to research. Now I have started (with some success)the task of identifying some of my parents many photographs. I have come accross a funeral register book that guests used to sign in at a wake. It is filled in with many many names. Of course the name and date of the person who passed was never filled in. Inside the book is a black and white photograph of the woman who died, lying in her casket. Inside the lid of the casket the word "mother" is stiched in the silk lining of the lid. My parents signed the book also as a married couple. They were married in the 1940s. I showed the photo to a funeral director friend who believes the photo appears from the 1940s as well. Based on that I believe the photo and the funeral book MAY BE one of the wives of Henry Osborne who died in 1908, but im not sure. Perhaps it is Susan or Rosa, im just not sure. Some of the folks who signed the book at the wake are, Mr. John Osborne, Grace Taylor, Wanda Goddard, Goldie Goddard, Mrs. Nola Farren, Mrs. John Degon, Mrs, W D Falls, Mrs. Tom Falls, Mr. L Y Osborne, Bettie Hanshew, Lydia Sheaves, Willard Thacker, Mr. J A Carter. If any one reading this believes they may help in the identity of this woman, and a copy of the photo will help, just let me know and I will mail it off to you.

Also I have a black and white photo of a toddler boy. The back of the photo is labeled Danny Lee Osborne 17 Months old. The back is also dated March 3, 1966. I was born in 1960, it would be fun to know who this young man is.

I only allow myself to work on genealogy projects about 10 hours a month. I will reply to any and all who wish to reply, it just may take me a couple of days as I limit my time working on this. Its so much fun and so enjoyable, one can get sucked into working on genealogy for hours and hours. Thank you for reading this. May God bless you and keep you, Joel Mason/Baltimore Maryland

Follow-up to my previous posting:

Since I have all ten of the cemetery books for Greenbrier County, I did a little looking and found the cemeteries for all four of the "missing" soldiers. I will type up what information I found in the books, plus directions to the cemeteries. Somebody else will have to do the photographs as I live in Michigan and don't have access to the actual cemeteries.

Lewis Stuart Davis:is buried in John Stuart Cemetery (Fort Spring District). He was born 4/17/1849 and died 6/14/1891.
John Stuart (Price) Cemetery directions: From the intersection of U.S. Route 219 South and Davis Stuart Road, follow
Davis Stuart Road 2.1 miles. Cemetery is in a field on the right side of the road.

Thomas William McClung: is buried in the Old Stone Cemetery (Lewisburg). He was born 3/8/1847 and died 12/23/1921. Age at death: 74 years 9 months 15 days. His parents were: William and Elizabeth McClanahan McClung. His spouse was: Elizabeth Strother Estil. The remarks section of the cemetery book indicates that there is no marker on his grave.
Old Stone Cemetery is on Court Street, next to the Old Stone Presbyterian Church.

John Robert Dunn: is buried in Riverview Cemetery (Fort Spring District). He was born 11/04/1846 and died 11/08/1906. His spouse was: Mary A. Dunn, born 2/18/1858 and died 8/18/1899.
Riverview Cemetery is on Edgar Avenue, Ronceverte, WV.

Sanford B. Skaggs: is buried in Jarrett/Hamilton Cemetery (Blue Sulphur District). He was born 7/16/1845 and died 3/18/1868.
Jarrett/Hamilton Cemetery directions: From the intersection of County Route 31 (Blue Sulphur Springs Road) and County Route
31/2 at Blue Sulphur Springs, follow County Route 31/2 approximately 200 yards to a farm gate on the left. The cemetery is through
this gate on top of the hill.

I do hope that this helps locate those soldiers.

There are four very brave men buried in Greenbrier County:

Lewis Stuart Davis, VMI Class of 1867, Fort Spring
Thomas William McClung, VMI Class of 1867, Lewisburg
John Robert Dunn, VMI Class of 1867, Ronceverte
Sanford Bernard Skaggs, VMI Class of 1867
We need photos of the graves. Grave locations are unknown. ;-(

The VMI Corps of Cadets fought as a unit at the Battle of New Market, Virginia, on May 15, 1864. Two hundred fifty seven cadets were on the field. Ten cadets were killed in battle or died later from the effects of their wounds; 45 were wounded. The youngest participating cadet was fifteen; the oldest twenty-five.
Two VMI alumni are attempting to obtain photos of the graves and biographical of all 257 cadets who fought in the Battle of New Market in the Civil War. This is a HUGE task. RAoGK has offered to help with the database.

You can visit their web page at http://www.augustagavmiaa.info/ and click on the New Market Cadet database.
Read about the battle at http://www.vmi.edu/archives/Civil_War/cwnm.html.

Hopefully someone on this list has the time to locate and photograph the grave. We welcome any additional biographical information not in the VMI archives or "The Corps Forward" by Couper and Gibson. If in doubt, send what you have and we will compare it. ;-)

Please send to me, sarahreveley@grandecom.net . I will then combine all the data on him and send it to them. They contacted me about my ancestor George Francis Reveley, who was a cadet then, and I volunteered to help them get the other graves photographed, knowing we have so many wonderful people on Rootsweb that will help. ;-)

Thanks,

This is a message that was posted on the Greenbrier Co. Rootsweb list serve. I'm posting it here in case anyone recognizes names from the photos listed and would like to contact Karen Cottrill to obtain the photo. KesslerWV@aol.com

Hello
Once again I am attempting to locate family of people I have photo's of.
These photos were left to me when a cousin died and left no immediate family. I
had listed them several years ago on the Greenbrier Co. list and was able to
send most of the older ones to researchers working their lines. However, I have
literally hundreds of photographs I need to find homes for. Some of them have
names or dates on the back and I am listing them below. Unfortunately, a lot of
them aren't titled. If any of these are your family contact me off list at
KesslerWV@aol.com and I will give them to you.

Just a bit of a background of where they came from so you will know the area
of Greenbrier Co. this family lived in. Augustus Allen Price (Uncle Gus)
1883-1963, son of Joseph D. Price 1842-1926 and Margaret C. Remley 1842-1917,
married Lennah Shawver (Aunt Lennah) 1885-1973 daughter of Lycurgus Shawver (Curg)
1857-and Josephine McClung 1863— Curg was a sheep farmer.

Uncle Gus Price ran a grist mill on Friday & Saturday and made flour and corn
meal. He built their big white house on the hill on their 104 acres of land
above Rupert near Kessler, WV. He also ran a saw mill. He later built a smaller
home on the same property for his daughter and her husband. He also built a
summer home and wildlife retreat, "Laurel Lodge" (sometimes called Laureldale)
at Kessler, WV on Big Clear Creek, about 3 miles from Rupert for his sister
Heneretta (Etta) and her husband Dr. Archibald K. Kessler who lived in
Huntington, WV.

He and Aunt Lennah had 3 children Edith Price who was born and died in 1911,
Haward Price who died at the age of 16 and Hazel Price who married Clarence
Armstrong but never had children. Cousin Hazel had a tremendous amount of photos
in her possession when she passed away in 1994. Being the family historian,
just about all of them were given to me. Here I am 12 years later still trying
to find a home for all these pictures. This will probably be my last attempt
and any that are not claimed this time will be sent to the Greenbrier Co.,
Historical Society in Lewisburg.

http://www.wvculture.org/history/medals.html At this site you can read the list of unclaimed Civil War medals in West Virginia and submit a claim for the medal of your ancestor.

Janet,
Thank you so much for your great suggestions and help. I am now able to access Heritage Quest and I will certainly check on Ancestry.com at my library. You have may already heard of a terrific genealogy website called, "Footprints of Fayette County" on Myfamily.com? If not--there is a ton of information available---pictures, obituaries, cemeteries, churches, coal mines, newspaper articles, birth, death, marriage records, family trees, other links, etc. There are numerous people who are willing to do look-ups or help in your research not only for Fayette County, but for some other counties as well. Membership is absolutely FREE, but by invitation only. I would be very happy to get you or anyone else an invitation to the website. First and last name and email address are needed for membership.

Thanks again for your help! PennieZ123@aol.com

A note about ancestry.com. Before you subscribe, check with your local library. The library in Marion has a library edition of ancestry.com which can be accessed for free at the library. You have to go to the library to do it, but it's FREE! So check on that before you send any money to ancestry.com.

Good web sites for genealogy are www.cyndislist.com and www.newrivernotes.com. There are soooooo many web sites, sometimes it's good to just google the name or family you're searching for. www.usgenweb.com is also good, but the county sites are not being updated with new information as often as they used to be.
Pennie Zickafoose 65 Posted - 08/28/2006 : 06:00:52
Joel,
In the "Greenbrier County Cemeteries--Meadow Bluff District", the directions for the Osborne Cemetery are: "This cemetery is located at Crag on County Route 24 (Crag Road) approximately 0.5 mile southwest of its intersection with County Route 20/2 (Fleshman Hollow Road)-this cemetery is accessible by a jeep trail crossing the Lance Farm---18 marked graves, at least 5 unmarked."

Henry Osborne is not listed as being buried in the Osborne Cemetery, but it could be an unmarked grave. I can't find him listed at any cemetery in the Meadow Bluff District or Blue Sulphur Districts---over 100 Osbornes listed.

Mr. Estep I will try to get a scan of the picture I have of Henry Osborne to see if it is the same picture you have. I believe it to be Henry, but I am not positive. Thanks. Joel Mason
