Hello Classmates,

Click below and enjoy the Chessie Caboose
Be sure and roll down far enough to read each of the eleven pictures.

Susie and I have been out again doing a little updating while during our walk...We knew you had enjoyed the past featuring the Shay engine...this is also a past ...As you can see the Chessie Caboose has been sitting on the tracks for a long time....

The caboose is a "Do you remember"

CSX owns it maybe they would be gracious enough to donate it to our little community...

I had an interesting dream this morning. Most times I try to remember them and go back to sleep and in the morning they are gone. That didn’t happen this time. Today I was wondering if it was due to sleeping in a strange bed, mind tricks, thing to come, or just a dream.

Somehow I was told to go to the CSX office across the tracks near where the Chessie caboose is parked. It was a small office and three men and one lady was there. I introduced myself and was told they had been waiting for me. News to me I just got the message. What is this about? One man pulled an envelope out and opened it. There was 4 sets of documents that he ask me to sign and give him a check for $1,450. and the caboose was ours and were we ready to move it? I said, “Do I look like I’m ready to move a caboose and what is the money for”? Ok, was the reply, we could leaved it there just sign the papers and give him the check that covered some fees and miscellaneous items. The others in the room were asking questions what was going to happen to the caboose, why we wanted it, etc. and I was getting annoyed because I couldn’t read the papers which were many pages long. I woke up and it was 3:20 am. Funny strange, don’t you agree?

Gotta keep the Chessie folder active. No news yet.
I was thinking of train songs and thought I’d list a few there. I was amazed at the number and variety of train songs out there. I saw this, which is a good sentiment: ”The influence of the train is not to be underestimated in music history. It has been mythologized in music for decades. It's been a symbol of freedom, of escaping your hometown, of traveling to fame and fortune. The rhythm of a train rolling across the tracks has been used within songs by everyone from Elvis Presley to Eminem”.

Way to many to list so here is a short list:

Here are some music and sound clips that you can play or not play.

If you have the time there is some great stuff on this site and an example is

Andy:
Not surprised that you reported the caboose had been moved. I would expect CSX officials would request a personal inspection and written report. This is one of several procedures, routines, reviews, etc. this request would take. The corporate world moves at there own pace and this is not a high priority item for CSX. CSX is exercising its “Due Diligence”. I wouldn’t expect anything less. There will be a well-documented file that will be reviewed and signed off on, whatever decision is made.

But then this is just my thinking.

Hello classmates,

I was playing golf yesterday afternoon when I approached our number five tee and looked up as I always do to see the Caboose.. the caboose was NOT there...My heart sunk

Good news, it was just a little way down the track from the orginal place it was sitting........

Susie and I walked to the caboose today to check out the situation of the caboose. We did notice the door was open slightly to where I could look into the inside from the ground...Naturally we did not enter...we did not want to be arrested for trespassing....plus any living thing living in there would not be good news for us...

The conclusion is the caboose is still there just slightly down from the orginial location...Lots of rust with some holes .......Hopefully repairable

When we hear anything on the Chessie caboose, I have been asked to do the post and I’ll list it in the Chessie folder.
Actually we are piggy backing off the Rainelle Reunion site for the creditability and hope there is a restored caboose that is an added attraction at the reunion.

Chris & Connard: I appreciate those train sites. Had no idea they existed. My family has railroad connections, as do many who read these posts. Thanks.

That Train wreck that was mentioned down at Meadow River big bend below the water tower took the life of Mr. Lynch the Father of two of our Class mates Oliver and Sue Lynch. I also knew one more Person that was on board that train but survived the late Mr. Oden Meade. Tragic accident for sure.

Not yet.

But I’m thinking we need a Quick Link on the home page for the C&O RR. We can find history, facts, information, and have it listed.

Personally I recall a couple serious steam engine wrecks. One was in the bend beside Meadow River down past the "Y" and before the water tower, where there was a siding for storing coal cars.
Someone had parked empty coal cars on the main line and a returning steam engine, well you know what happened.
Then between Rainelle and Meadow Bridge there was a serious wreck.

I know there is lots more info that can be located. Does any one know “Amanda Martin”?

It was done in Microsoft Power Point and just viewing it as a an HTML doesn’t do it justice.

Chris, a very good idea on the C&O link. I posted the C&O Historical Society on the home page - http://www.cohs.org The Chessie Shop, linked on the site, has some wonderful photos http://www.chessieshop.com/cgi-bin/csostore.pl

If you know a better link, please let me know and I will post it. Thanks, Dale

Don’t go getting all excited when you see the post. Just listing a few RR sites I located and thought was interesting.
Many sound clips of steam engines, couple nice pictures, and some surviving steam engines in WV. Looks like Cass, WV is very active in restoring and operating scenic line.

This is great work, Chris, Andy and all those submitting ideas and encouragement. It would be wonderful to have this to visit, along with history, photos, etc., on display. Dale

Working with Andy on the content I have sent a letter to a CSX senior official inquiring as to the status of the Chessie caboose #903503 setting in Rainelle. We made, what I feel, is a strong and somewhat emotional appeal for the donation of the caboose. A reply has been received from that individual noting the receipt of our request and it was being passed on for investigation. We have received a second letter acknowledging that individual #2 had received the “caboose donation request” and was in the process of trying to find out if the “Cab” in Rainelle is available for donation closing with the statement “he would be in touch soon”. If you are familiar with corporate policies, this will not be a one-person decision, so we just wait for the reply, and hope we hear something positive.

Personally, I feel we have a good chance. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for good news. If we receive positive news we are ready with the next presentation / appeal. If we receive a negative reply we’ll keep searching. I’m thinking that CSX may have a caboose somewhere they can donate.

The Rainelle Reunion web site was given in the letter and I mentioned we had an active topic about the Chessie Caboose. At least one person from CSX has viewed the site.

So many here have contributed great ideas and offered leads along with their thoughts that I used in putting together our request and vision for a restored caboose that would be part of the 2007 reunion.
