 Rainelle Depot being torn down

How very sad to hear about the old Rainelle Depot being forced to be torn down. It takes up so little space, surely someone could have donated a little money or contacted the right people in Charleston to get funds to preserve that historical building. It would make a wonderful museum. This is very sad. I don't know who own the land, but surely they feel something for our little town?

My understanding from what I read in the Beckley paper is that Randy Pendleton owns the land.

The depot has been totally torn down and the lot filled in--- it looks so very different!

Hello everyone. Gerry Mitchell has placed some pictures of the Depot being torn down. You can view them on the ever-growing Meadow River Lumber Company slideshow. Thank you, Ron Fleshman, for sending them to Gerry. If someone can send Gerry or me a picture of what the area looks like now, Gerry will place it. You can see the Depot pictures about 2/3rds of the way down the slideshow - in front of an article that is entitled, "Rainelle Landmark to be Razed".

The Meadow River Slideshow is amazing - thanks to Gerry's diligent work. It has grown to 773 pictures. It also includes some Rainelle area pictures such as old U.S. 60, the Lees Tree Tavern, Greenbrier Lanes, the Alphine Theatre, the drive-in theatre and more. It is sad to see our landmarks disappear, but it is comforting to know that they live in our hearts and memories and that we can view them here.

I also want to mention that Gerry has been working hard to improve the yearbook pages. We lost some yearbooks that were in Photoworks' links, but since Kodak has improved the size and quality of their links, Gerry is painstakingly reloading the pictures to Kodak. he has completed severeal years. You will see a difference in the quality when you visit the yearbook slideshows.

I looked and looked at all the pictures. I'm just fascinated by all the history that is on this site. When my dad worked on the railroad, I sometimes went to the depot with him if he had something to do there during the day. I also went to Flint's with him a lot. I loved that store.

Somewhere in one of the captions, someone commented that Rainelle was originally called Sewell. This is true, but it was before there was a Rainelle. Where the Osborne Addition is located was the Osborne farm. The area was called Sewell Valley. There was a Sewell Valley school somewhere in the vicinity of the old Osborne house, near where the skating rink/bowling alley was. I did quite a bit of research on this a while back, but was never able to figure out exactly where the school was. The meeting to organize Sewell Valley Church was held at the Sewell Valley school in 1888.

The JR&KT was the main road up into the 1920s. I couldn't find out when the road detoured around to Rupert either, but I found a reference in the 1920s in a motoring guide book that directed the motorist over the JR&KT from Meadow Bluff to Rainelle.
