Posted - 03/05/2006 : 19:50:05 Rainelle was special to us in so many ways and a lot of great memories were related to our sports teams. Store sign - "Be Back After The Game!" Friday night parades from the King Coal Hotel to the "Stadium". The post by Harold Viers made me think of how I looked up to he and several others who played for Rainelle when I was in elementary and Jr.High. Here are just a few names that come to mind. Harold Viers, Jr. Smith, Marvin Vaughn, Carl Rodgers, Tom Bobbitt, Donnie Dooley, Chubby Johnson, Jim Fleshman, Mike McQuain, Jim Lively, K.C.Farren, Mike Whisman, Cliff Neal, Jim Hanley, Joe McClung, Ronald and Rodney Knapp, Don McGuire, Danny Forbes, Tom Curd, Rodney Thompson, Joe Dale Ochletree, Lacy Smith, Jerry Osborne, Tommy Scarles, Dale Tincher, Robert Caudell, Jesse Copen, Donnie Tincher, Hilton Tincher, Jimmy Surbaugh, Buddy Whitlow, Rodger McClure, Mike Reed, Tommy Hall, Don Ratliff, Robert Ruffner, Butch Gilkerson, Sam Ripley, David Ripley, Carl Ripley, and Eddie McCall. I know as other names are mentioned I will remember more! There were many girls that made those moments meaningful as they marched, cheered and played in the band. I don't remember too much about our girls' sports teams. Please share. I am glad to say that in todays' world the girls have many more opportunities to participate and make these kinds of impressions on other young people. Thanks to everyone for making growing up fun!

What game could 2 persons play ,but only after you found an empty Camel cigarette package ? Kinda hooty but at least a post.
Connard, I cheated and looked in Google so I won't answer it. Very interesting. Our classmates who live in the Joe Camel area (Winston-Salem), Sue Tincher Dupor and Donnie Puckett might have some insight on this.

Posted - 03/07/2006 : 16:52:16 Thanks for adding to this topic. Let's not be too hard on our friends from Rupert and Crighton. The rivalries were great and don't forget Meadow Bridge. Those three mean so much to us. Many found life long partners there. Some more great friends have come to mind like J.D. Shaver, Steve Pack, Joe Cover, Bill Bostic and Ken Altizer. Dickie Simmons may have been one of the most enthusiastic people I have ever met. He did all the grunt work for the coaches and was always smiling. I have a special place in my heart for Richard Curd who made the ultimate sacrifice for us. He was really my hero because he was one of the little guys who was tough enough to hang. In looking back, the whole state championship football team of 1962 were young men who were special. Not just as athletes but indiviuals who made the Jr. High kids feel good about being part of RHS! I have coached for 35 years and the ideals I have shared with all of my teams got their beginnings at RHS. Thanks for the memories and the encouragement to do good. On a personal note - I remember Coach Zopp having me jump center at the start of a game at White Sulphur against Jackie Joe Robinson who went on to be a small college all american while playing at Glenville State College. I was 4'11" and Jackie was 6'5" - any doubt about the results? We not only lost the jump ball but we got smoked in the whole game. I later got to be friends with Jackie at Glenville. He didn't think the jump ball deal was as funny as I did. Let us hear from you! |

Posted - 03/06/2006 : 12:21:15 Haha Dale, I agree with you, my other half must have memory problems concerning the football. He did laugh real loud when he made that statement. The secret to the perfect hot dog is the slaw and chili - i cannot make the perfect hot dog. Polly, we all expect perfect hot dogs soon. I bet you have the secret... uh, sorry about the hot dog post on the sports forum, but they really do go hand in hand...don't they?? |
