Hello everyone,

We received a nice note from Leah Johnson-Wallace (see below.) I was one year ahead of Chubby and knew him well. His losing his life as a young police officer was a shock to all of us. Swede was an important part of our history. If you have any stories and/or memories to share about visiting Swede's place or about Chubby, John and/or Leah, please feel free to contribute. If you wish to send me a note off-line, we will be happy to post it on the board. If you would like Leah's e-mail address, please let me know. We don't normally post e-mail address on the board to prevent spammers from getting the addresses.

My name is Leah Johnson-Wallace. I graduated from Rainelle in 1957. I am new to this technology stuff but am interested in seeing what your website has to offer. I'd also like to put my name on a mailing list for future communications just in case someone might be interested in contacting me.

My father, John Johnson "Swede", owned a lunch room across from the Methodist Church in Rainelle. My brothers are Charles ("Chubby") and John J. Johnson. Chubby was killed in Paw Paw, W. Va. in 1977.

Thanks again for putting together this website.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Warmest Regards,

Leah Johnson-Wallace

It's been so long since I have added any comments, but I have been on this site at least 2 or 3 times a month just being amazed at how we can "go back home".

I can't let this opportunity pass without just simply saying that I loved Swede and how he treated us. It's ironic, but I just made a comment this weekend at our golf course about how good the hot dogs and sandwiches were that we had at Swede's in high school.

Chubby was so nice to me and I admired him for his athletic ability.
I was a couple years behind Chubby in school and those of you who remember from those days will recall that I wasn't very big.
A stout 5' and at least 98lbs., but Chubby always encouraged me when we were in the gym for basketball practice.
Chubby was an outstanding athlete, but he was even more outstanding as a friend.

There can only be classy comments made about this family because that's how they were to the many people who were fortunate enough to spend time with them.

Thanks to Mrs. Wallace for sharing, and for letting us know that our memories of she and her family do help to make for some magical moments in our lives.

Penny, I have misplaced your email address. Would you send it to Carol Weaver and she will pass it on to me. Sincerely.

I went to school with Chubby and we graduated in class of '65. He was a gentleman. He was kind, considerate and was so well liked by everyone. I went on to become a civilian with the State Police and Chubby later became a trooper. I was so proud of him. I saw him a couple times a year after that and as he was friends with our troopers, he stopped in the office when in Rainelle. It's been so many years ago that I can't get sent to the office for it, but Chubby is the reason I passed Math in high school. I was a terrible student of Math. I sat behind him in the classes and Chubby knowing my grades were low and Math was difficult for me (altho I did great in English) would scoot his paper over to the edge of desk to write and during tests would lift his hand enough for me to see his answers. That is the one and only reason I passed Math. He was a great person.
