On January 25, 2006, Susie Weber Minturn and myself, Andrea Aide Pendleton had ventured on our usual four mile walk on this cold windy day. The temperature was approx. a range of 25 to 29 degrees. I had taken my camera with me hoping to share some Rainelle pictures with our classmates.

Gerry Mitchell's surprise visit was fun and he was a delight to see again...I just don't know whether Gerry will be back or not....you see I took him for what he calls a wild golf cart ride....We visited the Rainelle Cemetery by way of the golf course...I took Gerry straight up the mountain...Shaking in his boots...before it was over...he was still laughing......Oh! my goodness I never thought without Gerry no more scanning of yearbooks...

Posted - 04/20/2006 : 15:12:16 I last saw Mr Coffman about 12 years ago in Lewisburg. He stood straight, still smiled, and carried on a good conversation. He was always strict but we learned not to complain about him or any other teacher at the supper table: Mother and Dad alwayssupported the faculty. And they were probably right. I remember Mr Coffman opening up the gym for basketball practice on Sunday afternoons for either the 5th or 6th graders. Two conditions: right kind of shoes and you had to have gone to Sunday School (the ACLU would have loved it!). He was the only coach and insisted on us learning the correct way (HIS way) to dribble, pass, and shoot. Does anyone recall when Bruno Snider was on the faculty and the "events" associated with his car, which was parked along the east side of the school? Or when his classroom had the egg stain on the wall above the black board? (No, not me; we were in the class coming in next and Mr Coffman had kept the previous class in place.) Yes, those were the days, my friend. |

quote: Rex D. Adams is currently the Dean of the Business School at Duke University and previously was a Vice President of Mobil Oil Corporation. He is a Rhodes Scholar and was Academic All-American in football at Duke in 1961. He is a native of Rainelle.

Posted - 04/07/2006 : 15:11:08 My memories of Mr. Coffman are of a very stern person that rarely smiled. Yes, his glasses slipped on his nose all the time and he had a bad habit of readjusting them with his middle finger which drove the students nuts. We didn't get by with much and unfortunately I did have some occasions that I was subject to his discipline (such as skipping school). He was certainly not a mean person but he did demand respect and we gave it! Mr. Ocheltree was much more likely to chat with you whereas Mr. Coffman seemed to deal strictly in school matters. I know I thought Mr. Coffman was old as the hills. I believe Mr. Coffman is still alive..anyone know?

Posted - 04/07/2006 : 12:03:28 I recall Mr.Coffman as a very stern person but a very fair person,he also put the fear in me of not wanting to visit him in his office. Does anyone recall his Glasses always sliding down on his nose and pushing them back. very annoying habit to watch. I liked him a lot. Is he still alive ? |

Posted - 04/06/2006 : 22:04:51 Roy Coffman was one of the kindest, "child friendly" persons I've ever met in the school system. He had a way of dealing with young people that did not require fear or an iron fist. Mr. Ocheltree had a totally different approach but he succeeded in his own way. Mr. Coffman counseled with young people, Mr. Ocheltree expected results. Both methods seemed to work...this could be a very interesting topic...input here anyone?? |

Posted - 04/06/2006 : 18:27:47 Evelyn, I have heard so much about Mr. Coffman. He was a speaker at our 1992 reunion, but I never had the pleasure of meeting him. I was wondering what were the major differences between the two or fond memories (maybe not so fond ) you may recall of Mr. Coffman?

Posted - 04/06/2006 : 13:33:05 The class of l956 was the first for Dale Ocheltree at Rainelle. He was a great change from Roy Coffman. Harold Johnson graduated in the class of 1956. He loved music so much that I know he must have been a great band and chorus director.

A few pictures Susie Weber Minturn and I had taken today on our usual walk ....We hope you enjoy !!

One of the picture is a plaque in memory of our Rainelle principal Mr. Dale Ocheltree. He was the best principal any student could ever have known, Mr. Ocheltree loved his school and his students..HE CARED He was always fair and steadfast in his duties. Students, teachers, and parents always respected Mr. Ocheltree for his wisdom and knowledge. We all remember we were not allowed to walk on the grass or across the new gym floor without our tennis shoes on..And no one did...During our '64 class picture we were allowed to take the picture on the lawn in front of the school...I was most honored to be able to stand on Mr. Ocheltree's lawn...TRUE...
Another picture was of our wonderful music teacher and band director Mr Harold Johnson. He had the best and most outstanding band any school could ever ask for.. He was a perfectionist in the appearance of his band and it showed..on a personal note I was not musicially inclined I was never able to sing in his all county chorus until my senior year....(honestly, I would not let me go either)..Mr Johnson said, "Andy, you can go if you promise just to move your lips and pretend to sing"....Then he gave me a great big smile..I was great at pretending to sing......Everyone loved Mr. Johnson ...
Our Rainelle Teachers were all special...

Posted - 04/02/2006 : 22:59:19 Hello everyone. Evelyn Utterback Drake, Class of 56, sent an intersting link from the Sunday Gazette Mail / WVGazette online version, dated 4-2-06 http://www.wvgazette.com/section//2006040121 ‘It’s been a long time’; Power plant has revival hopes coursing through Rainelle
The first four paragraphs read as follows: RAINELLE — For five years, the people of western Greenbrier County have been hearing that a power plant was coming, bringing jobs to Rainelle.
Some say they didn’t quite believe it — a $215 million project that the U.S. Department of Energy declared would “create on the order of 6,000 direct, indirect and induced new jobs.” That would be more than enough to make Rainelle the thriving town it used to be, before its lumber mill, once the biggest in the world, shut down in 1970.
Now government agencies have committed to a big chunk of the total funding: more than $110 million. State environmental authorities three weeks ago made a preliminary decision to allow the plant. Two families whose houses are nearest the site are being bought out, and spokesmen for Western Greenbrier Co-generation LLC say they should break ground in summer, with the plant pumping out electricity by early 2009.
But the 6,000 jobs won’t immediately materialize. The power plant itself would employ about 40 people, with another 60 or so contract workers, according to WGC. Further jobs would depend upon spinoffs.
(Click on the link for the remainder of the article.)
Thank you, Nancy!
I've been out of town on business since Wednesday. I started to say, "it's good to be back", but sunny, breezy Miami isn't terrible duty this time of year. It is good to be back, though. Dale
