Hello to All, I just read where Galen Martin of KY passed away. He was a lawyer and activest for civil rights. It also said he was born and raised in East Rainelle, WV. Graduated from Rainelle in 1945. His parents or siblings were not listed, but another article said his dad was in watch repair and sold guitars. I wanted to know if anyone knew what Martin family he was from. |

Hello to Elda,Andy and Norma. What a great opportunity has been provided by Dale, Andy, and others who make this communication possible. All involved are to be commended and it's unbelievable that we who graduated from RHS many years ago are able to use this "new" technology---must have something to do with the great basic foundation of education we had, right? I'm glad someone else could answer Elda's answer about the "C&O" houses. I don't even know what they are unless they are what we called "company" houses in Rainelle. I lived in East Rainelle---Stonewall Zopp, grandfather of Bob and Ed Zopp, lived down below us. Robert, Billy, Marie, Elmer, Elvin,Martin (no relation, I think, to Amen, Ruby et al.) children of Ross and Maude Martin were our close neighbors. We kids all played cowboys and Indians. Homer Hedrick lived close by too, but seems he didn't play with us. (He was "Sonny" in those days.)I did sometimes stay with the Harrises who lived in one of the "company" houses across from school. Mona Gray (McKee) and I keep in close touch. Mr. Coffman and I stayed close until his death and I count that such a blessing. I give honor to him for the well-disciplined school we had and he and I often laughed together about how different things today are in schools. He told me many funny things about schools he Principaled (? I guess I just coined that!!) Thanks for these responses. I'm looking forward to the upcoming reunion. Sadly, my husband who was with me in 2002 reunion died Dec. 30, '03, so it won't be as enjoyable but hope to see many from the past. Thanks to the ones on the All Class Reunion Committee who are working so hard to make that possible. Twyla |

I was saddened to learn of Galen's [we knew him as Afton] death. We graduated in the same class, 1945. We visited at the third multi-class reunion in 2002. He is in the class photo taken at that time. His life was dedicated to humanitarian causes ... what a legacy!
I looked in the 1945 yearbook under the heading of "Class Prophecy" ... Madame Knowalot gazed into her crystal ball for the future of the class of '45, and wrote: "...next I see two brick buildings. Let's enter the newest ... the principal is Herbert Walker and he is in his office talking to Afton Martin. Afton is the leader of the Republican party in West Virginia. He is now leaving and I see him get into his car and his chauffer, Athos Roy, drives him home." Memories, memories ... how wonderful.
Elda, you mentioned the small houses in which we grew up. I tell my children it was my castle. I've enjoyed your posts.
Hello Twyla ... We haven't communicated for awhile. I had forgotten about Mr. Landrum's shoe repair shop. As I recall it was on one side of the Martin building and Amen Martin had a watch repair business on the opposite side.
My gratitude, again, for Dale, Andy, Gerry, and others who work endlessly to take us back home. You are appreciated!

Twyla to live so close and never see you....I hope things are ok with you ...it is just nice to see you even if it is on the website.
Elda, I was pleasantly surprised to hear you have talked to my brother Gary a few weeks ago.
In answer to one of the questions about the C&O houses...Sorry to say they were just recently demolished......Just a matter of weeks....yes, there were also beautiful flowers that would come up during the spring and summer knowing that long ago someone very special had planted the flowers.

Twyla, it was a nice jolt to my memory to see your posting. I had completely forgotten Mr. Martin's first name. Also, I think Mrs. Watts' name was Zelma, not Thelma. Wilda Gaye may have the answer for that question.
Also, do you know if all of houses in C&O are gone? There were still a few there the last time I visited. We lived in two different houses, and both were sold and moved, so I can only locate the first house by the trees my mother planted.
By today's standards, our houses were much too small, but for me, they were suficient, and we had the woods above and below our houses to roam. Joan McQuain and I spent many afternoons looking for wild flowers, collecting leaves, and trying to identify trees. We also had a creek, swimming hole, and hickory nuts (if we walked the track far enough to the Callison land), and great friends and neighbors. Also, the Corrons had a wonderful set of encyclopedias !

I remember the Martin family, Amen and Ruby, and children, Afton and Wilda Gaye. My mother, Eunice Bradley Cain was a good friend of Ruby.As I recall, Amen and my uncle, Les Landrum, who repaird shoes, were either in the same building or their businesses were next door to each other. Les was married to my mother's sister, Hildra, parents of Margaret (married Guy Fugate), Ruth (later, Cutlip), "Bud" (married Margaret Hershberger, and Freddie (married Adrienne Camp. I also knew sisters of Ruby, Mrs. Rhodes, Billie (later married to Les Landrum) and Mickey Henry, who was a member of the Lewisburg Methodist which my husband, Jack Wallace, and I joined after our marriage. I have recently become re-acquainted with Gaye Martin Williams through exchanging emails. I was very impressed after learning of Afton (Galen)living such an exemplary and active life. MARTIN, GALEN, 79, died Tuesday, December 19, 2006. He served as first executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights and later headed the Kentucky Fair Housing Council. He is survived by his wife, Lou Martin; sister, Gaye Williams; children, Robert, David and Julie; grandchildren, Aaron, Amy, Alex, James, Adam, Shelby, Jacob, Brandon and Kelli; and three great- grandchildren. Memorial service is 3 p.m. Friday, December 29, 2006 at Central Presbyterian Church, 4th and Kentucky Streets. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the KY Fair Housing Council, 436 S. 7th St., Louisville 40203, or the Berea College Fund, 101 Chestnut St., Berea KY 40404.

Galen was Ruby Martin's son and brother of Wilda Gay Martin. Last week Wilda Gay and I had a long telephone conversation about her parents, brother, and a lot of Rainelle. It was wonderful to catch up with the family after many years. I remember seeing Galen Martin one time after he left Rainelle, and it was when Evelyn and Lake Lambert lived in Jeffersontown, Ky, which is near Louisville. I am sure that was over thirty years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin died several years ago.
Mrs. Martin and Thelma Watts came to my home for lunch, sometime in the seventies, on their way back from Hawaii. Both had retired and seemed to be having so much fun in their travels. In Hawaii they had put on their swim suits and played in the ocean: both were so excited that they had done this. I laughed the whole time I was with them, and I decided, after their visit, that getting older didn't have to be dreaded.
Both of those ladies were so helpful to me when I was a young teacher at East Rainelle Elementary.
