Hello everyone,

Gerry Mitchell sent some photos of the old Meadow River Lumber Company, the Rainelle Department store being torn down, the King Coal Hotel being torn down and the big block of coal, a copy of a commencement. You can see some of them at: http://www.photoworks.com/share/shareLanding.jsp?shareCode=A53D1F1BFF7&cb=PW and others of a Rainelle gas station http://www.rainellereunion.com/images/history/GASSTATION a Shay Engine photo http://www.rainellereunion.com/images/history/THESHAYENGINEPICTUREBYLOCALARTISTREDUCED.jpg and two photos of the Rainelle Department store being torn down http://www.rainellereunion.com/images/history/TEARINGDOWNRAINELLEDEPTSTORE-HARDWARE,OFFICEGONE-1988.jpg and http://www.rainellereunion.com/images/history/TEARINGDOWNRAINELLEDEPTSTORE-VIEWFROMACROSSHIGHWAY-1988.jpg

Photos of the Rainelle Department store sign are in Gerry's possession - see or http://www.photoworks.com/share/shareLanding.jsp?shareCode=AB87392C060&cb=PW (Photoworks) or http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.12ecco5s&x=0&y=-udrhmu

You can right mouse click on photos to save them to your hard drive or you can write to GERRY or me for the originals. You can also order prints from Photoworks for 15 to 19 cents each.

Andy Aide Pendleton sent this very nice link to numerous Rainelle photos on the Rainelle Memory Project. http://www.wvculture.org/history/wvmemory/photoresults.aspx?Per=&Topic=&Geo=rainelle&Col=&Words=rainelle&Op=AND&NumRec=50

I hear that Tink Collins can probably help us a lot also. Speaking of Tink, Gerry Mitchell and Tink were winners of the Greenbrier County Science Fair in 1963 and 1964 - see newspaper photos at Photoworks http://www.photoworks.com/share/shareLanding.jsp?shareCode=A204382C061&cb=PW or Kodak Gallery http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.ev2wz1s&x=1&y=4ncvtw This will also be posted on the Class of 64 page.

Check back for more photos and images under this topic/thread. Dale

Hello everyone, I have uploaded some photos that I hope you will enjoy. I had Staples (office supply store) scan several pages of a Class of 64 yearbook and also scan some very nice photos that Virginia Meadows sent of a recent Rainelle reunion. Staples saved the scanned photos to a CD for me. (Virginia Meadows is wonderful about taking photos and cataloging events.)

If any other classes wish to place their yearbook photos online, please take them to Staples, Kinkos or another office supply place, ask them to scan them to a CD and send the CD to me -- or upload them to Photoworks.com, Kodakgallery.com or Walmart's photo page and "share" the link with others on this discussion board or send the link to me and I will place it on the board.

Gerry Mitchell had warned me that the yearbook photos did not scan well for him. As you will see, there are some patterns ingrained into the photos. However, they are still fun to view. The reunion photos came out well.

I have copies of the scans of the class of '64 yearbook and the reunion that are approximately 35% larger. If you want a digital copy of any of them, let me know and I will e-mail them to you.

I will probably also put the photos on the final Website. However, in the interim, you can save (using right mouse clicks) or print from here or order print copies from Photoworks.

The Photoworks slide show has several options, e.g., a larger view of the photos, different speeds or you can simply view them one at a time. I hope you enjoy them.

Andy Aide Pendleton sent a booklet with the first reunion photos. I am having it scanned now and will upload it next week.

Thank you, everyone, for your very nice comments and contributions. It is a real thrill to see the activity and to catch up on old friends. (By old, I don't mean in years. 60 doesn't seem old like it used to.)

Hopefully, some of my closest friends will keep some of the stories to themselves if they meet my daughters. Just kidding, comparatively speaking (to today's times), we were pretty tame.

Colin Lively and I got together last night in NY and had a wonderful discussion about some of the good times we Rangers had growing up. I will post a couple photos of our visit later.

We have a real treat. Gerry Mitchell, Class of 64 - now living in Ohio, went to great pains to take and prepare 2006 photos of Rainelle for those of you who don't get back often. That was very thoughtful of you, Gerry. Gerry also included two scans of paintings by Jeanne Brenneman, who is listed above. One of them is Rainelle High School:

Hello everyone,

I had the scanning service I use (Staples) rescan the Reunion 1 booklet that Andy had been kind enough to send to me. Staples had initially scanned 2 pages at once despite my instructions to scan each page individually. Here is the Reunion 1 booklet scanned one page at a time. Staples still did not do a great job, but this did help with the clarity of some of the photos and they are much better than the first link I posted. I hope you enjoy them: http://www.photoworks.com/share/shareLanding.jsp?shareCode=AA1D8A1C02D&cb=PW

The prior version is located at: http://www.photoworks.com/share/shareLanding.jsp?shareCode=A2ADC52C018&cb=PW

If you want an original version of one of the photos, feel free to contact me. The originals are considerably larger. Or, you can save (right mouse click), print or order prints of the photos from Photoworks.

Thanks Gerry for the pictures that you took of what the ol' town looks like today. I really enjoyed them.
FYI (For everyone) as Dale pointed out earlier
http://earth.google.com is a truely great program and its free and
http://terrafly.com is another good progarm for aerial views.
If only earth.google had the resolution of the entire globe that it has for major cities. I especially like the tilt mode that allow you to fly over an entire area.

Rainelle looks the same from space as I remember it.
Gerry's pictures tell me something quite different.

Any ways, one question I have for here, what is the construction west of Sewell Creek and south of the rail road and sort of east of the now closed lumber yard?

Gerry Mitchell is going to periodically improve photos and send them to be uploaded to the Website. Gerry is very good with photoshop and other image software tools. He has scanned and improved a 1964 band yearbook photo and a photo of the Rainelle band marching in a Huntington parade (year unknown.) I will add his scans to either Kodakgallery.com or Photoworks.com and periodically announce the updates. Both photo services reduce the sizes of photos. For example, a 1.4MB photo he sent was reduced to 98KB. If you want copies of the originals, please get in touch with Gerry at gerry.mitchell@rainellereunion.com

Update: Gerry has added a wonderful photo of the '64 Ranger football team. His original is 1.4MB in size and is high-quality. He has also added a scan of the homecoming queen and attendants and '64 basketball team.

These photos will generate very nice prints from Kodak.

More treats! Gerry Mitchell has scanned several additional photos from yearbooks. They currently range from 1959 to 1964 (with more to come) and include band photos, majorettes, sports photos, etc. I have uploaded them to both KodakGallery.com and Photoworks.com. Thanks to Polly, I have learned that KodakGallery does a better job for dial-up users. Photoworks provides a larger, clearer photo if your connection will support it. You can order prints, if desired, from either, but PhotoWorks will probably do a better job if you want large photos (I'm guessing.)

Just viewed your photos. Thanks for the memories. The Ranger Band was awesome. There were more members in the picture in 1964 than Greenbrier West band ever had.

Remember before each home game how the band would march from the King Coal Hotel to the football field? The street would be lined with proud parents, neighbors, and fellow students. " When the Saints Go Marching In" would be ringing from the mountain tops. Oh, what glorious and beautiful fall days we spent in Rainelle. We were blessed with the best!!!!

Chris, since Conard thought I might remember some of the old businesses in town I came up witht these: Don Array Shop, Hugharts Men Store, Billy Shockley--IGA ( Gene Nelson and Claude Morton worked there when I was a little girl), Hameds' 5 and 10, Mick and Mack 5 and 10, Royal Cafe, Rosalie Lunch, Greenbrier Dispatch Office, Nunleys Tavern, Martin Jewelers,(Ruby Martins husband owned this), Mossers Drug Store, Mrs. Irene Hutsenpiller Flower Shop, Ola Alvis Flower Shop, Dickenson Brothers Furniture, Alvis Furniure, Ammar Brothers, Betty and Theresa Twohig ran the little restaurant, where we ate when we were in grade school, Preacher Westlake at the First Baptist Church, Bible School was held at the East Rainelle Graded School and I truly believe every child in East Rainelle atteneded. I have pictures of these Bible School days. Lots of kids I still reconize from those days. I remember the Hersey Reds baseball team and they played behind the Old Rainelle Dept. Store. My oldest brother played on that team and we went to the games every Sunday afternoon. I remember sledding down off the school house hill (Neffs) all the way down Gbr. Ave. to 9th street. The older guys would build big bon fires at night to let us warm up. I learned to swim in the sewer line Meadow River and everyone thought I would take a disease. I am still here as I am sure a lot of other kids are. Iforgot to mention Veon Cox's Grocery Store, Price-McKnight Grocery Store, and Webbs Market. Yes, Pudge, I remember when the old Fiesta Club was called Geno's. He did make the best pizza. I also, remember the Couples Club at Hines and it was also called the Rendevous Club at one time. Sure did have a good time growing up here. Enough said for today. Conard should have known not to get me started.

Thank you, Tom. Actually, both '52 and '62 are in that photo - '52 is on the top and '62 is on the bottom. We scanned the reunion booklet a page at a time and some pages have both classes on them. Please scroll down or expand the page (using the Windows expand button that appears in the lower right of the photo (in most Windows versions)) and you will see the 1962 photo. Thank you again for pointing this out - someone else may run into the same situation.

We hope to find time to separate the pictures on the pages so each classes' photo will appear by itself.

After reading your post, I added a comment on the pages that some photos have 2 class photos per page.

We will make mistakes and appreciate all comments, suggestions and corrections.

Hello everyone,

Unless we missed a page or two, every reunion page should have only its individual class's photo when you click upon the class year and reunion link: http://www.rainellereunion.com/classes.html You may need to "refresh" the class pages if you visited them recently. If you wish, you can start with your class's yearbook, go to the first reunion, travel to the second reunion, then go to the third reunion and watch your classmates age. I hate that I missed many of the reunions, but perhaps watching my photos go from 132 pounds in high school to 213 now might depress me (for a few minutes.)

It is great fun to do see our wonderful classmates on the pages and remember the good times.

Gerry Mitchell is anxiously awaiting more yearbooks to scan so we can make further progress on the yearbook links.

We will be adding additional Rainelle area photos over the next couple of days. Keep checking back - we're having fun and more is on the way.

A special note of thanks to Chris Dawson for his wonderful posts. I have heard from friends that some classmates are reluctant to post, but are having a great time reading the posts. This is evidenced (as Chris mentioned) by the 1,200 page views on the "Do you remember" topic and 1,000 views on the photos topic. Don't forget that we have classmates who have limited mobility and/or ability to get out and we have heard that they are having a great time reading and remembering. They would love to hear from you -- and your comments will spark a smile and memories for them and all of us.

These pictures are just terrific. Hindsite is always 20/20, but wouldn't it have been wonderful if someone would have had the foresite to have bought M. R. Lumber Company, preserved it as it was and kept people trained to show how 'things used to be'----what a tourist attraction that could have been! The King Coal Hotel could be full every summer!
Thanks Warren!

Andy Aide Pendleton forwarded two photos of Gerry Mitchell who dropped by her house during a recent trip to Rainelle. Gerry wrote to me that, "she gave me breakfast and took me on a wild electric golf cart ride around the Rainelle Golf Course and cemetery. You can not believe!!!!! "HA"."

Here are two photos of Gerry, probably still in shock from the ride:

http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.s896dig&x=0&y=-70sxvw

I think I'll ride with someone else when I come to Rainelle. Kidding aside, Andy is a great hostess, as Gerry passed on to me. He had a wonderful time.

I'm glad we finally get a chance to show photos of Gerry, the man who has contributed so much to making this site a success. Once again, Gerry, thank you!!!

Today is bonus day - you get 3 updates for the price of one. Gerry is back and busily scanning historical items. This piece of history is a Rainelle Methodist Church directory from 1966 to 1971. Some of the photos are a bit older than that. Terry Clower was kind enough to loan us the directory. Gerry Mitchell scanned it. We hope you enjoy it: http://www.rainellereunion.com/photos.html#clower

George "Tink" Collins sent an e-mail saying, "The photo was taken by Tom Ocheltree, Dale Ocheltree's brother. He was a professional photographer for years and took many RHS yearbook photos. The photo is ca. 1955. I will check my files to verify specific date.

A large wall-size blowup of this photo was in the old Greyhound Bus Station when it was in the building that also housed Flint's Hardware. It was moved to the "new" bus station when Ray Smith move the station and his drug store to across from B. T. Collins's electronics shop (Reba's grandfather). There was also a giant blowup of the Anjean coal tipple. I hope someone saved those two blowups."

Andy Aide Pendleton is looking into finding the photos. If anyone knows where they are, please let us know.

They are now personally owned and can be viewed by anyone....They are located on seventh street in the office of Frankie Martin.

I have taken pictures of the pictures of Rainelle that once hung on the wall of the ole Bus Terminal. Again you will have to overlook my picture taking expertise. Dale will be in Memorial Day Weekend, therefore I will encourage him to take better photos......

They are so good that I also uploaded the originals and linked them below, as well as on the Website photos page.

Some notes from Gerry include:
A PICTURE OF A C AND O RAILROAD ENGINE WITH A LOT OF LOCAL RAINELLE PEOPLE STANDING IN FRONT. THE PICTURE IS DATED, NOV. 1956. PEOPLE SUCH AS RC BISHOP, WHO WAS A C AND O SUPERVISOR, AND HUBERT BUSTER WERE AMONG THE PEOPLE SHOWN.

http://www.rainellereunion.com/images/clower/C_AND_O_ENGINE_WITH_RAILROAD_PEOPLE-1956.jpg

A 1950S PICTURE OF THE RAINELLE METHODIST CHURCH WHEN IT HAD THE WALKWAY TO THE LEFT AND IVY ALL OVER THE BASEMENT AREA. RON FLESHMAN TOLD GERRY THAT THIS IS THE ONLY CHURCH KNOWN MADE OF CHESNUT, HOWEVER, THE CHESTNUT HAD TO BE SUBSTITUTED WHERE FIRE DAMAGE OCCURRED. FORTUNATELY, THE MAIN SACTUARY, WHERE THE CHESTNUT IS MOST NOTICEABLE, WAS NOT DAMAGED BY THE FIRE.

http://www.rainellereunion.com/images/clower/RAINELLE_METHODIST_CHURCH_IN_THE_1950S.jpg

A 1920S PICTURE OF THE RAINELLE DEPT STORE(RAINELLE SUPPLY CO THEN WITHOUT THE GROCERY ON IT). YOU CAN SEE THE GAS PUMPS OUT IN FRONT. I DID NOT KNOW THEY HAD GAS PUMPS IN FRONT. I THOUGHT THEY WERE ON THE SIDE. LOOK AT THE STYLE OF THE GAS PUMPS.

A very large poplar log being hauled by a team of two horses and Meadow River Lumber Company employees as pictured in a newspaper article.

http://www.rainellereunion.com/images/clower/THEY_GREW_BIG_TREES_IN_THOSE_DAYS.jpg

A BUNCH OF KIDS SITTING ON A SCHOOL STEPS. IT MAY BE THE OLD SCHOOL COMPLEX IN RAINELLE. BUT TERRY'S DAD IS ONE OF THE KIDS ON THE FRONT ROW (WE AREN'T SURE WHICH ONE.)

BUNCH OF LADIES INCLUDING TERRY'S MOM. HE WROTE ON THE BACK OF THE PICTURE THE NAMES OF THE LADIES SO I SCANNED THE BACK WITH THE NAMES OF THE LADIES.

Hi to all, this is just a reminder that old photos require some tender loving care if they are to survive in our harsh world. The acid in envelopes, cardboad shoe boxes, etc. and some photograph albums, will absolutely destroy photos. They may fade into almost nothingness or the paper they're printed on may begin to fall apart and deteriorate. If you have treasured photos or other paper memoriabilia, look into getting acid-free archival storage boxes to keep them in.

One company that sells storage products is www.lightimpressionsdirect.com. There are others, but this is one that I've used and found to be a good one. Janet

Good Morning,

I received an email today from Nell Powers. Nell's Mom and Dad were French and Theda Powers...Mark and Gary were her brothers.....The Powers family was known and loved by all...The Powers were leaders in our community as all of you know....

Yesterday Nell registered on our website therefore I emailed her a little note welcoming her to our website.........

Nell's reply:

quote:
Hey Andy:

Nice to hear from you. Yes, I found the website...my daughter actually is the one who found it and then emailed it to me. She thought I had already seen it. I have spent the best part of two days browsing thru all the memories people have posted. I then spent this evening chatting with Danny over and over again about the contents I had seen so far. I am sure he will be checking it out soon himself.

I have loads of photos that my Dad took back in the 70's when Rainelle was vying for West Virginia City...do you recall this? However, the pictures are slides, not photos. I am thinking on how to get some of them converted to digital or at least photos. This procedure currently is pretty expensive, but I may have a plan (my 2nd cousin does this for a living and might (?) give me a break). I have other pictures too that would fit in perfectly with memories. One comes to mind is an 8 x 10 of the volunteer Fire Dept when my Dad was a member (in late 50's/early 60's) and there are many men in the shot. I will have to get to a good scanner OR buy me one like I have been wanting. The ones I have had in the past did not have the pixel quality I desire to have.

And then of course, I have ALL the Powers' Family photos. I have been the "Keeper" of these for many years. There are boxes upon boxes of slides that Daddy took of the 4 of us, the books and piles of photos, and then I also have Mom and Dad's early years together (when Mother was better able to place them in the old time photo albums and journal them (pre-children). Best of all for old memories, I have my Grandmother Nell (Fleshman) albums....scrapbooks of newspaper articles and deaths and photos too.

I am bragging about all the goodies that I have, but do not know when I can produce any of it for the Rainelle website. I will place on my "to do" list to do so a little at a time, because this could become a major commitment based on the closet full of Powers' memorabilia.

As for me and Danny's children...they are doing very well and living in Raleigh. Recently, my son came across one of Tom Rider's girls in Raleigh when at the dentist office for a routine visit. They did not know each other before us leaving Rainelle (and Tom too), HOWEVER they acknowledged the connection to Rainelle, family and common friends. Dan and I moved into our new home (empty nest) almost a year ago. Dan built 99% of it himself. I am now retired, disabled, but keep very busy with the home, our newest "girls" (beagles), family stuff and close friends. Also, it seems I am in some kind of doctor's office at least once a week for something or another. I am going to physical therapy currently 3 mornings a week also (which is really helping my back and legs).

Wow...this short email ended up as a book! You may share this email with others that might be interested in hearing about one of the Powers girls. And I am sure you will be hearing from me again soon ON the website. That is, as soon as I can dry up these happy tears of wonderful memories that flooded back to me the last two days!

Yours,

Nell (Sissy) Powers Gwinn

Hello everyone. I just returned to North Carolina after a wonderful week in West Virginia visiting friends and relatives. My youngest daughter, Sarah went with me. The Rainelle area was beautiful. I enjoyed seeing several classmates. Andy Aide Pendleton was a gracious hostess for a day and a half and took me several places where I could get great photos, as well as visit friends. The Rainelle hot dog dinner I had announced on the board was fun. Some friends showed up for it. Some others who couldn't make that date, were kind enough to arrange a get-together the next night at Smokey's on the Gorge restaurant. I have linked photos from those events, plus Babcock State Park, New River Gorge views, Rainelle School, plus some Rainelle photos. I hope you enjoy the photos. If you would like any large electronic original versions, I will be happy to send them. Or, I will be happy to upload the originals to Kodak Gallery and you can order prints from Kodak if you wish. Dale

http://www.rainellereunion.com/photos.html#rainelle_dt

I will describe the photos better when I have more time.

I welcome comments about any of the locations. They will help visitors who are planning trips to Rainelle. BTW, I stayed a couple nights at the Dawson Inn off Exit 150 of I-64 and enjoyed it. Terry Fleshman happened to be there and we had a nice chat. My understanding is that he developed it and Lynn Durham owns it now. I will send more observations about Rainelle in the future. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

Please check back. Gerry has sent several items that I will post soon.

Nell, it is great to hear from you and we are excited about the photos.

We also heard from Bobby G. Ayers II. Bobby will be sending several Rainelle photos from his collections.

Some updates - the Greenbrier West '71 yearbook will be up soon. That will conclude the yearbook scanning since we have all of them back to 1929 with a few exceptions in the 30's. If, however, we come across any more older yearbooks, we want to scan them.

Virginia Meadows has loaned us beautiful color photos of the 2002 All-School reunion. I will send them to Gerry this week and he will scan them for the Website. Watch for them later this month or early next month. Dale

This is not the brick building there now that was built in the 60's. I'm looking for a picture of the white frame building that sat where the cemetery is. It had two doors on the front.

Any help in locating pictures would be greatly appreciated. I get by with a little help from my friends.

Hello everyone. Janet Estep sent two interesting photo scans. I am pasting her comments, "The first is of the East Rainelle Rotary Club. I believe they are having lunch at the King Coal Hotel. I do not know any of the men in this picture, although I recognize Mr. Mosrie (standing, 3rd from left) and Mr. Coffman (seated, center, behind the flowers). My grandmother worked as a cook at the hotel and I believe she probably served or cooked for these men at their lunch meetings. It's not a very good picture because the lights are visible on either side of the picture.

The second picture is of children whom I don't know. These were in my grandmother's pictures. The children's picture was taken in East Rainelle, looks like the late 40's. Perhaps someone on the Reunion Site will know who they are.

ML and Janet,

My Dad is in the hospital and will be released tomorrow...At times he is a little confused......He will remember the skating rink, however Dad will not remember the date of the opening of the rink....I will try to ask him some questions concerning the skating rink....I will ask my brother Richard, he may remember. I really just remember going skating myself.......Not with any of my brothers or sisters.

I remember JD Surbaugh going really fast around the rink....I remember Johnny Cash singing the song "Ring of Fire".

Again I loved to skate..

Yes, Randy and I openned the skating rink in Rainelle....It was fun ....but It was not as nice as the orginal one..The rink was located as to what most of you know as the old A&P building....Also my bones did not heal as well in the 70's as the 60's....

Andy

I have very special memories of the skating rink, first in the Osborne Addition, then at the old A & P. We lived 5 houses up from the 1st skating rink...I was "too young" to go skating in the evening hours in it's earliest years, yet my brothers were there on a Friday or Saturday night. I could and did skate during the Saturday afternoon hours when it was mostly reserved for those of us under age 10 or so, yet there would be the occasional teenager, showing off their skills and we 'lil girls would swoon and "ahhh". Every now and then, Daddy would take me down on Friday/Saturday night to watch Mark or Gary skate for an hour or so and I can vividly recall the "girls" skating so gracefully wearing those colorful pom-poms on their freshly polished skates. I vowed I would have the same and skate as well. I eventually graduated to an occasional Friday skate (Saturday was still taboo--God only knows what went on on a Saturday night that I was not allowed to see?). When the rink closed and became a bowling alley...I was there too, HOWEVER, I was one of the first in line to skate at the "new" rink and the music at that time was mostly The Monkees--(Day Dream Believer)--or the Beatles. Eventually, my interest faded and growing up got in the way of me going as much as I once did. Just this evening, my husband and I were discussing an old skating injury to my right knee...it is still numb, yet now it "creeks", just like those old oak floors at the skating rinks.

Hi Sis!!!
So good to hear from you! I just had to reply to your skating rink memories. I can tell you for a fact that Gary was a great skater. We went around that rink together hundreds of times---yes, I had the pretty pom-poms, but I don't know about the graceful part!!! Some of my very favorite memories from Jr. High are of those nights at the skating rink---it was a special time and I will always cherish the memories!
Gosh-I haven't seen you for ages. I think the last time was when I took your picture with the Surbaugh Avenue street sign
Hope all is well!

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased some oak panelling from a local reclamation yard that had been taken out of a company Board Room. It will be used in our Victorian farmhouse (no longer a farm) that we are slowly renovating.

Stamped on the back of the timber is "Meadow River Lumber Company, W. VA. USA." I'm no timber expert, but it is beautifully grained wood.

I couldn't resist searching for the source and have had great pleasure in looking at the photos of Rainelle and the history of the Meadow River Lumber Company.

Many thanks for enabling me to see where the wood originated - it's been fascinating.

Good luck with your web site and future projects.

He sent back a message saying that after WWII they had two people from England living with them, for a period of time, to learn the lumber business. Also that a lot of lumber was shipped to England after war for reconstruction.

Gerry Mitchell sent six very interesting photos of Rainelle in the 1920's to 1940's.

Gerry's comments are,
"ENCLOSED ARE SIX INTERESTING PICTURES FROM ONES I HAD FOR A LONG TIME. ON ONE, YOU CAN SEE THE RAINELLE DIRT MAIN STREET AND THE TRAIN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD THE CHURCH IS ON. THIS PICTURE MUST BE REALLY OLD. THERE ARE HARDLY ANY BUILDINGS.

IN ANOTHER PICTURE YOU CAN SEE THE SAME MAIN STREET SCENE IN THE 1920S WHERE THE OLD CARS ARE RUNNING AROUND STILL ON DIRT ROAD AND THE RAILS CROSSING THE STREET WERE STILL THERE BUT THERE ARE MORE BUILDING IN THAT SHOT. THEN THERE IS A VERY OLD PICTURE OF THE LUMBER MILL. IT MUST BE OLD. LOOK AT THE WATER TANK. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THAT TANK BEFORE. IT MUST BE OLD. AND A GOOD PICTURE OF THE RAINE MANSION AND A PICTURE OF THE PIONEER HOTEL. I HAVE NO IDEA WHEN THE RAINE MANSION PICTURE WAS TAKEN BUT I NEVER REMEMBER IT LOOKING LIKE THAT SO IT MUST BE OLD TOO. LATER PICTURES LOOK DIFFERENT WITH BIGGER TREES AND THE PIONEER HOTEL PIC MUST BE IN THE LATE 40S OR EARLY 50S. HOPEFULLY I MAY GET SOME MORE OF THESE. FINALLY THERE IS A OLD PICTURE OF EAST RAINELLE WITH A SODA STORE BUT I CAN NOT TELL WHERE IT WAS TAKEN. IT MUST HAVE BEEN TAKEN WHILE THE TOWN WAS CALLED SLAB TOWN."

Thank you, Gerry:

Gerry located and scanned an interesting article about Clear Creek Coal, a mining town built around WW II. This will bring back some memories. He said his mom and dad had taken him to it to show him what had once been a "state of the art" town for its time. The article is interesting. It states that
"miner's homes are brick and tile construction with every modern appointment, e.g., bathrooms, hot and cold water, electricity", etc. Can you imagine living in that kind of luxury? Enjoy the article and photos at http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.2htp5z1o&x=0&y=-dhvrfo

We asked Bobby to let us know more about what he is doing for the area so we could put it on the discussion board. Bobby described his venture as follows:

"THEN AND NOW"

VOLUME I

BY BOBBY AYERS II

"Then and Now", is a book of towns in Fayette and Greenbrier counties. They are collections of research done by Bobby Ayers II. Included are news stories and pictures from the early 1900's through today. Older photos are compared to the same sights of today. For instance a picture from main street Thurmond in 1915 will be compared to main street Thurmond of today from the same angle. Other photos are of archival nature such as the interior of Prince Station. Many of the places such as the Qunnimont Hotel and Thurmond hotel are no longer standing.

The towns included in this book are Layland, Danese, Quinnimont, Prince and Thurmond. The bulk of this volume is from Layland due to the 1915 mine explosion (the largest in Fayette history) but there is also a wealth of info. and pictures of the other towns. Thebook is nearly 100 pages and price is $25 a book; if you are interested or have any questions please contact me at bobby.ayers@rainellereunion.com I am currently working on volume two which will include; Rainelle, Rupert, Springdale, Meadow Bridge, Beelick Knob, and Hinton. Thank you.

Hello everyone. Gerry Mitchell has done a wonderful job (with help from many of you) of locating, scanning and placing Meadow River Lumber Company pictures and information into slideshows. One slide show has more than 360 historic photos and articles. The collection is so impressive that we decided to devote a page to Meadow River Lumber Company history. Enjoy it at http://www.rainellereunion.com/meadow_river_lumber_company_rainelle.html

Hello everyone. Gerry Mitchell has been hard at work on several items - collecting, cropping and enhancing photos. He has also been patient with me until I found time to post them.

Some new items from Gerry include:
Trail Blazer, a bulletin published by East Rainelle Grade School in the 1940's sent by Kenneth Napier - http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.2yz3tuiw&x=0&y=fub0e
For a refresher on what it was like in 1941, see Betty June Altizer's poem, "We've Got To Whip The Japs" as well as Peggy Levisay's "My America" and the page "For The Service Of Our Country".
(The Trail Blazer was challenging to scan and enhance - great work, Gerry.)

Veterans and the 2007 Run For The Wall Photos and Comments From Rainelle School Children

A collection of old gas stations from the 30's, 40's and 50's.
http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.bjpdegk&x=0&y=-jl6hw2

Gerry has also spent a great deal of time on the Meadow River Lumber Company pictures and information. He has added an amazing number of pictures and other images (500+) to it. The slide show now has some pictures from The Greenbrier Historical Society Journal for which Kenneth Napier obtained permission for us to use on our site. The slideshow now has expanded information on the town and Rainelle and the surrounding area towns. To see the slideshow, plus several other Meadow River Lumber Company and related links, see our Meadow River Lumber Company page - http://www.rainellereunion.com/meadow_river_lumber_company_rainelle.html

Kenneth Napier has been working hard to find and get permission to use additional photos and information for the site. Thank you, Kenneth!

Gerry, once again, thank you for your hard work and faithfulness to the Rainelle memories, history and Website.

Thanks to Dale, Gerry and Kenneth for their continued work on articles and pictures. These new additions are great.
Although the Trail Blazer was printed before I was born, I can remember so many of the folks that were in the articles. I attended East Rainelle and always enjoy the pictures, etc. from that great school.
Thanks Again for another trip down memory lane!

Patty

Hello everyone. Colin Lively sent a link to a YouTube video - "Driving Through Rainelle". It made me homesick - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sgiGAzyAT5Y Thank you for sending it, Colin!

Gerry Mitchell sent a YouTube link of a run of the Meadow River Lumber Company Heisler #6 steam engine and a Shay engine similar to the ones Meadow River had used. Gerry reports that the Heisler is an acutal Meadow River engine that was sold to Cass, WV in 1968. As Gerry relayed to me, it is exciting to watch since it has the actual sounds and view of the engine, including the whistle - that Gerry and many of us have not seen and heard in many years - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GfQqFEFzwpE The YouTube video is linked from the very nice Meadow River page that Gerry continues to update so well - http://www.rainellereunion.com/meadow_river_lumber_company_rainelle.html

It is good to see the new posts on here. As some of you may know, I lost my sister Karen on March 11. She put a gallant fight against cancer but it was the victor in the end. It seems everyone is "going away". I thank you so much for all your prayers over the past 15 months. God Bless You.

Janet, I clicked on your myspace page but it said it had been deleted or changed.

Marilyn.

Hello everyone. J. W. Puckett loaned us a Meadow River Lumber Company Festival Book. Gerry Mitchell painstakingly scanned 181 photos from the book which contains a history of Rainelle and the Meadow River Lumber Company from 1906 to 1970, complete with a very interesting list of people who worked at Meadow River Lumber Company over the years. Thank you once again, Gerry. Enjoy the book at http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=u46feyk.1x1cx4hc&x=0&y=-qpqenp&localeid=en_US The book and more information is also linked from the Meadow River page on the Website.

If you have additional photos or books that we can add to this online Rainelle Museum, please contact Gerry. He is wonderful about organizing the information and working hard to put it on the site. Dale

Gerry, thank you for doing another great job on the Meadow River Lumber Company. Thanks also to J.W. for the book. In reading the names, brings back so many pleasant memories of when we grew up. Again, thanks. Gingy Walker Manspile

Hello everyone. Gerry has added a history of the First Baptist Church of Rainelle in the East Rainelle portion of the Meadow River Slideshow. He has placed a picture of the first church build around 1911, pictures of the modern church, and six pages of history on the church - see http://www.rainellereunion.com/meadow_river_lumber_company_rainelle.html#slide_show

Gerry has done an amazing job on the slideshows. This slideshow has more than 600 photos and displays many old photos of scenes and a corresponding photo of the current or a recent scene. Your Rainelle friends who do not have a computer would also enjoy seeing this superb online museum that Gerry has developed. Bring them to your house, give them a cup of coffee and watch them reminisce and smile.

I bought a book on the internet entitled, "West Virginia, a book of geography, history and industry" by M. P. Shawkey, printed 1922. It is enscribed with the name of Prudence Louise Stroup, Rainelle, WV. There are some other names written in the book: Mr. Fred Holsberry, Lewisburg, and another name written where a page is torn with "Rainelle, WV, Feb. 28, 1923".

The book is not in good condition, but if anyone wants it, let me know. It didn't have the info in it that I needed, so I'm willing to pass it along if someone else wants it.
